Opinion: What will come next after monumental corruption exposed in Mason City School District?

Mason City School District Admin Building: Where citizens and probably the state auditor think crimes likely took place.

After all this corruption and a State Audit showing how and who made off with $2.2M of public money from an elected Board so naive, unprepared, and lazy as to assure the gang an on going theft at will atmosphere within their headquarters.

When you add the lack of policy to treat the media and public as participants in a public school system’s operation and performance at the regular monthly meetings you set the table for corrupt persons to dine on the public $$$$.

John Dillinger came to MC once and withdrew less than $60,000 at the First National Bank one day, using guns and human shields as tools.

The FBI didn’t take that lightly.

He paid up after a movie in Chicago one day, in the ally.

The next couple of yet unanswered questions, “does crime pay in a Iowa public School District documented by the State Auditor, and what charges will be filed & when after $2.2M has been “mis appropriated”?

Then watch to see if the current MCSB and Admin. act as if they learned anything from all of this after eight years of nap time.

Media has a duty to shine the light into all public institutions, continuously. Start by demanding in advance all meetings of the Board
via a public Agenda & packet of info on it provided on line and at the meetings for those in attendance.

Then read the media reporting.

Why does Mr. Versteeg (Superintendent) want some of the audit dismissed on certain employees? If he had nothing to do with this situation to begin with, then why doesn’t he want “True Transparency” for everything? Who and Why is he trying to protect those that have a part in this?? Cover after Cover! Absolutely ridiculous!

Maybe he is a good boss and doesn’t want to cause undue hardship on people who were in the dark on the situation. Perhaps he cares about his employees. He isn’t covering up anything. He just asked that some employees names be redacted.

Wake up! Mr. Versteeg tried to have an official State of Iowa report altered to suit MCCSD. This is outrageous behavior. He needs to be reported and face charges for trying to tamper with a DCI investigation. What else would he like converted to suit his needs/wants?

The school board only has power to hire a superintendent and set policy…. they don’t get involved in employee salary.

If they have to pay this money back – it should come from EACH PERSON INVOLVED and money to be collected by Cerro Gorgo Treasures office – NO CHECKS from the school board as they will just funnel our taxpayer money to cover the shortage.

Private citizens -OR maybe just ONE ! should hire a law firm to see that this 2.2 MILLION dollar theft is repaid by the culprits that stole it. – If NOT –THEN file CRIMINAL CHARGES against these POS. Most any law firm would take this case on say a 30 % contingency bases meaning no upfront money from the citizens. Probably 25 law firms from Des Moines alone would jump on it.

Why hasn’t charges been filed already????

mason city taxpayers are stupid – that means they will not stand up and do a damned thing about this. demand prosecution!! go to the school board office and demand prosecution. but i do not think that will happen because the average taxpayer is undoubtedly very stupid. so let the crooks in public office steal from the taxpayers, make a pocket full of money and move away. stupid taxpayers of mason city.

So I am guessing you think the tax payers of Mason City are stupid….correct?

…I would like to know “why” the school board meetings are “not” covered on the TV access channel like the council meetings are, along with any other city and local “governmental” bodies whenever they are held…who has the control of this channel and who can we talk to about “why” these meetings are scheduled???

Good question. Board of Supervisors, too.

I respect your opinion. However, in reality, if you think the majority of MC citizens would watch a School Board meeting, that would be surprising. If this current situation would not have occurred, there would probably be a handful of people who care. You can’t even get parents to show up for Parent Teacher Conferences. I feel the same about the County. Nothing to see there. The City is different. It conducts more business that is relevant to everyone who lives here. With the County, I don’t think people really care about drainage ditches, geo maps, how many fishing licenses are issued by the Recorder’s office, Platte maps. It appears that the only time anyone speaks up is in December when the salaries of the Elected Officials are set. People just like to gripe on this site, it’s cheaper than Therapy.

What are they going to do?? Just what government always does, ask for more. Its not real money to them, its yours and theirs for the taking

Does anyone really think anything will be done about this?
Many school boards are incompetent/lazy.
Recent MC school boards were EPIC in their incompetence!
Is this board any better? Time will tell.

Probably not a fricken thing will happen as our county attorney is a chicken shit and wont want to do a little extra work to prosecute these thieves. This is so pathetic of our school district. I just hope our community sticks together and votes no for any thing that pops up that includes more money for the schools.

Sounds appropriate. However, a lot of dirty underhanded stuff continues to happen, i.e., Joel Everest working at Waldorf College (I knew of a colleague who took a year sebactical from the district and when MCCSD got wind that he was working during his unpaid leave at another district, he was dismissed.) Why the special treatment for Joel?

What about administrative staff going on vacation during the school year? Teachers are not allowed to do this so why the double
standard?

Tip of the iceberg of special privileges for pets.

How does the MCCSD Board of Ed. plan to handle these situation?
