ANKENY – A tragic situation unfolded at an Ankeny, Iowa business Thursday as a man took his own life after learning he was to be terminated from his job.
On Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at approximately 12:23 PM, Ankeny police officers were sent to Fun and Action, 106 SW Linden St. Suite 1D, in response to a call of shots fired. Based upon information gathered from the caller, adjoining businesses and the above apartments evacuated.
A person who called 911 reportedly explained that the deceased man – identified as 45-year-old Clifford Scott Gottula of Arvada, Colorado – was about to lose his job at the business. KCCI TV reports that after receiving this information, Gottula went into a nearby bathroom at which point employees heard what they believed to be a gunshot.
After unsuccessful attempts at establishing communication with Gottula by a negotiator, officers and deputies entered the business where they found Gottula dead inside, from what appeared to be a self-inflected gunshot wound.
Ankeny detectives processed the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
The Ankeny Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Ankeny Fire Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Department and the Polk County Medical Examiner.
