Wooze’s car wash demolished for new Kwik Star station

Corner of Federal Avenue and South Federal, former home of Wooze’s Car Wash

MASON CITY – A long-time structure on a busy Mason City road was leveled this week to make way for an exciting new business.

Run-down area at 15th Street SW and Federal Avenue with potentially dangerous conditions were only dealt with after multiple complaints to the City.

Wooze’s Car Wash operated for decades at 1502 South Federal Avenue in Mason City.  Online records show Kwik Trip, Inc. bought the property owned by Specialty Car Wash (Wooze’s) on or around May 24, 2018 for $293,000.00.

The business stopped serving customers around that time.

This past week, the aging structure was completely torn down.  The building was deteriorating, was not friendly on the eyes, and much of the sidewalks, boulevards and surrounding areas had fallen into disrepair.  Complaints had been lodged with the city, in fact, due to potentially dangerous nearby conditions.  Snow was rarely removed from the adjacent sidewalks in the winter and thick ice was always present, making for treacherous conditions for pedestrians.

Perhaps bringing an improvement to the seedy area, construction will begin in coming months by Kwik Trip, Inc. on a new convenience store and gas station (Kwik Star) which will allegedly open late next year.  There have been concerns lodged by citizens to City officials about the potential of idling semis parking there for long periods of time, souring the air.

A nearby property owner told NIT, “Anything beats what was there.  The place might have been popular in the 1980’s, but this town seems trapped in those days.  I, for one, welcome any new development along South Federal that somehow does not involve the sale of 20-year-old used cars.”

Pig shit also sours the air but I guess pigs wallow in their own shit so that doesn’t count does it? Every semi that passes through this town adds a bit of revenue and growth to this town. It’s the morons in city and county council that you elected that you need to remove and replace so you can have a robust economy again rather than them shafting you up the ass and stealing your money. Bookmeyer, Callanan and all the cronies that meet at the Quarry restaurant are deciding your future while you stay home, keep your mouth shut and watch tv. They want to milk you hard but do not want growth cause it becomes competition for them. Wake up stupid people. Take control of your town. Watch out for over zealous democrats who take your side but screw you by paying themselves and accomplish nothing for you. Time you idiots of Mason start using your brains and take control of your town.

Welcome Kwik Star to Mason City. We are glad you are coming. Increased growth. The people who are complaining are a bunch of useless bastards who are 1. stupid or 2. old and about to die. They lack common sense and have no concept of growth. That’s why the town is slow in growth and city and county officials are screwing the tax payers. The general population (the majority) are stupid and would rather get screwed than confront and fix the problem. Be glad and damned well thankful that there is another business coming into town and investing rather than bitching and complaining. You folks who complain are very very stupid.

if YesWay’s weren’t on their way out they sure will be after it is built. time someone stood up to yesway and caseys who fix the fuel prices in mason city., once had a monopoly but it will soon be gone,.

Kwik Star puts quite a few people to work, and that cannot be a bad thing. The place is clean, fair prices, and friendly help. I was an old skeptic when they first appeared, but I am now a regular customer.

If they attract a lot of Semis, will there soon be Recreational Reptiles offering their services?

This Kwik Star is not going to be a truck stop.

Pay no attention to OO, a self proclaimed expert on everything but mostly full of hot air.

Care to qualify your statement? Give an example please.

Life!

Apparently Semis Don’t sour the Air in Clear Lake. Drive by Kwik Star, Pilot and Best Western any night of the week and the Lots are nearly Full. Best Western is near a Cemetery and other businesses that welcome the additional revenue. I doubt the 4 or 5 semis parked in the Sears Parking lot are causing an air issue. Those complaining played Suzy home-maker while the wife held a full time job, plus they don’t know anything about a truck or a truck drivers life. So go ahead – complain and let Clear Lake continue to grow.

Mason City peaked in the mid 1980s. Thanks to Shickel, Robin, and others the town is in steep runaway decline. Prayers.

Now if the city could do something about the fenced in weed patch just west of there.

The city doesn’t own that weed patch. How can they do something with it?

They can make the owner clean it up, like they do with other run down properties in town, DUH!

The city has their own weed patch across the river from the East Park sledding hill and west of Carolina Ave. Why would they worry about a private weed patch?

Oh, yeh, their motto is “do as we say say, not as we do” They can force people to maintain their lawns but the city can own lots with noxious weeds (thistles) and even if you call them out on it they still won’t do anything.

….someone offered to buy that weed patch down by the sledding hill, city said no, because of the payout out from the flooding.

That area is considered a flood plain, and your not allowed to do anything with/to it.

How many noxious weeds are on that property? If the thistles bother you, be a concerned citizen and cut them down. When you do, have a photographer from NIT take your picture while doing it, post it on this site, and you will finally be famous. If you call the right person, something will get done.

When is the city going to make Russ Hardy clean up the junkyard of his?

You’ll have to call city hall, I don’t think that anyone on this site can answer that question. Don’t be scared, they won’t retaliate.

City Hall? City employees must have gotten complaints about it from neighbors, especially Mercy. I think the City has turned a blind eye to the eyesores that Mr and Mrs Hardy have created, or at the very least, enabled them.

Just look at the illegal transfer station at 504 1st Street SW. It has been there for over 3 years and no action has been taken. Trash is strewn all over the property. And who knows what has been dumped there, and what has leached into Willow Creek.

Where is the Planning & Zoning Commission? What about Neighborhood Services? Maybe if Chad Stobbe at the DNR got enough complaints, some action can be taken (515-725-8351).

Every other transfer station in town has had to abide by the laws (567; chapter 106[455B]), why not the Hardys?

With all the hue and cry about the environment from that family, they operate this illegal transfer station? Chutzpah!

step up and do something about it

Oh yes they will and you know it. Or else they will just ignore you.

The city has let the parks go to crap too. East Park used to be the city’s crown jewel and has been let go, run down and looks awful!!! Now they poured curved cement, added boulders and no walking signs on the SE side… IS STUPID AND LOOKS TERRIBLE!!! Who approved that? And how about giving the poor deer some straw bails and actual shelter?

why don’t you get your fat ass up and do something about it instead of just bitching online? make it happen. city and county officials are gonna screw all of you until you get them out of office.

Which one, specifically.
