Iowa Corrections Director Jerry Bartruff announces retirement

DES MOINES – Iowa Department of Corrections Director Jerry Bartruff announced his retirement Monday. His last day at the department will be Thursday, December 27, 2018.

“On behalf of all Iowans, I want to thank Jerry for his leadership of an important state agency,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said. “In his time as the leader of Iowa Corrections, he has helped redefine the agency as one that focuses not only on safe incarceration, but on evidence-based rehabilitation. This includes his efforts to grow the department’s registered apprenticeship program, which now offers 22 apprenticeships in multiple industries.”

“Jerry has upheld and improved the reputation that Iowa has around the country as being one of the most results-oriented correctional systems,” Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg said. “His service to this state will reap benefits for many years to come.”

On his announcement, Bartruff commented, “I’m humbled to have been able to serve in this significant department for the majority of my career. From my start as a Correctional Officer, to my time as Correctional Counselor, and through the many other positions I’ve been able to hold while working for Iowa Corrections, I can say with great confidence that there is no finer correctional system in the nation. The department has seen its share of challenges over the years, but our devoted staff have worked together time and again to overcome these trials. I hope that I’ve been able to leave the department on a positive path for the future.”

Bartruff began his career in Corrections in 1982 when he was hired as a Correctional Officer. He would go on to serve in leadership positions as Iowa Medical Classification Center Treatment Director, DOC Re-Entry Coordinator, DOC Deputy Director of Offender Services and DOC Deputy Director of Eastern Operations, and was named as Director by Governor Branstad in 2015.

Bartruff resides in North Liberty with his wife Carla. They have two children.
