Wrestling: No. 3 Iowa narrowly defeats Iowa State, 19-18

AMES – The Iowa State wrestling team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell to in-state rival No. 3 Iowa (5-0, 1-0 Big 10) by a narrow margin, 19-18. The Cyclones and Hawkeyes split in bouts won, 5-5. The difference in the dual came down to a bonus-point victory for Iowa.

Redshirt sophomores Ian Parker and No. 14 Jarrett Degen kicked off the dual in style for Iowa State, each capturing a victory by decision.

Parker toed the line with Iowa’s No. 16 Max Murin. In the third period, Parker trailed Murin 4-1, but an escape and an unnecessary roughness call on Murin made the match 4-3. Parker won in a late scramble for a takedown and won the match by 5-4 decision.

Degen’s match against No. 11 Pat Lugo went to tiebreaker one. At the end of regulation, the two were locked at 4-4 and no scoring came in sudden victory. Degen was able to ride out Lugo in the first stanza of tiebreaker one. In the second, Degen earned an early escape and then slammed the door on the Hawkeye with a takedown for a 7-4 victory.

After an injury default from Iowa’s Myles Wilson in his match against No. 21 Marcus Coleman, the Cyclones led 12-9 at the break.

Following intermission, Sam Colbray kept the Iowa State momentum going with an upset-victory over No. 11 Cash Wilcke. Trailing late in the match, Colbray put up one last attack and landed a takedown with five second remaining for a 7-6 victory over the Hawk. At that point, Iowa State lead the dual 15-9.

Iowa showed its teeth. They took victories at 197, 285 and 125 pounds. They pushed ahead 19-15 heading to the final match.

The 133-pound bout lived up to its hype. It featured No. 14 Austin Gomez and No. 10 Austin DeSanto. After a review in the third period, the match was tied 8-8. Gomez took DeSanto took his back, putting the Hawkeye in danger. Gomez kept DeSanto on his back for 20 seconds before he was able to shake free. Gomez won the match 14-9, but Iowa State ultimately fell 19-18 to No. 3 Iowa.

Next Up
Iowa State will send some of its wrestlers to the UNI Open next Saturday, Dec. 8. The team will return to dual action on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. when they take on Ohio at Hilton Coliseum. That dual will be broadcast on Cyclones.TV.
