NEW YORK – The Iowa men’s basketball team defeated the UConn Huskies 91 to 72 to claim the 2018 2K Empire Classic in New York Friday night.
Iowa jumped out to a 12-4 lead on tough defense to open the game, along with a couple big three pointers. Iowa led 43-27 at halftime and its lead are to 25 points during the game.
Tyler Cook and Luka Garza were selected to the 2K Empire Classic All-Tournament Team. Garza was honored as the tournament Most Valuable Player.
The last time Iowa won an in-season tournament was the 2007 Hawkeye Challenge. The last time Iowa won an in-season tournament outside of the state of Iowa was the 1998 San Juan Christmas Shootout.
Three Hawkeyes posted season highs in scoring: Tyler Cook (26), Luka Garza (22), and Connor McCaffery (19).
