WASHINGTON, D.C. – A former football player for the University of Iowa has been installed by the White House as the acting Attorney General after Jeff Sessions resigned.
Matthew G. Whitaker is serving as Acting Attorney General. Whitaker was a tight end for the Iowa Hawkeyes under coach Hayden Fry. Prior to becoming Acting Attorney General, Mr. Whitaker served as Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He was appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa on June 15, 2004 by President George W. Bush. While U.S. Attorney, he served on the Controlled Substances and Asset Forfeiture Subcommittee of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee and was a member of both the White Collar Crime Subcommittee and the Violent and Organized Crime Subcommittee. Previously, Whitaker was a managing partner of Des Moines based law firm, Whitaker Hagenow & Gustoff LLP. He was also the Executive Director for FACT, The Foundation for Accountability & Civic Trust, between 2014 and 2017.
Mr. Whitaker graduated with a Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctor, and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley issued the following statement on the resignation of United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Jeff Sessions is a dedicated public servant and man of honor. I was proud to serve alongside him in the United States Senate for over twenty years. His leadership, integrity and dedication to our country as Attorney General are admirable and commendable. Jeff deserves the thanks of the nation for his service. I remain personally grateful for his valued friendship over the years.
“I look forward to working with Matt Whitaker as he takes the helm of the Justice Department. A fellow Iowan, who I’ve known for many years, Matt will work hard and make us proud. The Justice Department is in good hands during this time of transition.”
Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) issued the following statement with regard to the resignation of United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
“Jeff Sessions has always been a strong leader who has served our nation and the state of Alabama well, both in the United States Senate and as the U.S. Attorney General. He should be commended for prosecuting the largest number of violent offenders and firearm defendants in our nation’s history; taking on violent gangs like MS-13 and restoring immigration enforcement to the United States. He also has been on the forefront of the charge against our nation’s opioid epidemic, by increasing prosecutions and stopping illegal drugs at the border. Our nation owes him a debt of gratitude for his service and commitment to the rule of law.
“Fellow Iowan Matt Whitaker is a man of integrity and values. As Acting Attorney General, Matt Whitaker is a steady hand that will provide good leadership and judgment, and will ensure that the United States Department of Justice upholds the highest standards of the rule of law.”
President Donald Trump also issued a statement Friday night, saying, “Matthew G. Whitaker is a highly respected former U.S. Attorney from Iowa. He was chosen by Jeff Sessions to be his Chief of Staff. I did not know Mr. Whitaker. Likewise, as Chief, I did not know Mr. Whitaker except primarily as he traveled with A.G. Sessions. No social contact. Mr. Whitaker is very highly thought of by @SenJoniErnst, Senator @ChuckGrassley, Ambassador @TerryBranstad, Leonard Leo of Federalist Society, and many more. I feel certain he will make an outstanding Acting Attorney General!”

Sessions did not resign. He was fired. A long time Trump supporter who still supports Trump and almost all his policies was dumped because he won’t do something unethical and illegal.
