Champion Iowa State University golfer found dead in Ames; man charged with murder

AMES – A champion golfer from Iowa State University was found dead at an Ames golf course, and a man is in custody charged with first-degree murder.

Former Iowa State golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena, the 2018 Big 12 champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year, was found dead Sept. 17 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, according to a statement from the University. She was 22. A native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, Barquin Arozamena was a senior in civil engineering.

“This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and an acclaimed student athlete,” Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen said. “We mourn with her family and friends in Spain, her teammates here and all who knew her. On behalf of the entire Cyclone family, I extend our deep condolences to Celia’s family and her many friends and teammates at Iowa State. We are deeply saddened.”

“Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed… Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador,” ISU Athletic Director Jamie Pollard said in a statement.

Following the suspicious death near campus, Iowa State University Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police Michael Newton has authored a letter to the campus community, encouraging vigilance when it comes to personal safety.

Reportedly, 22-year-old Collin Daniel Richards is in custody and facing a charge of murder in the first-degree. According to Ames police, at approximately 10:24 AM Monday morning, officers were called to Coldwater Golf course located at 1400 South Grand Ave in reference to a suspicious circumstance. Golfers had located a golf bag with no one around it on the course. Officers responded and subsequently located a body some distance away. During the course of the investigation, officers determined the victim had been assaulted and died as a result. The investigation led to a suspect – Richards – who was charged with Murder in the 1 degree, a Class “A” Felony. Richards has no known address.

The Ames Police Department was assisted by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Iowa State University Police Department, Boone County Sheriffs Department, Iowa State Patrol and the STAR1 Search and Rescue Team.
