Mason City student activists to hold event to recognize victims of gun violence

MASON CITY – The Mason City High School Student Activist Group has organized an event to stand in solidarity with the student victims of gun violence.

This event will be held Friday, April 20, 2018, at the Mason City High School Gym during “Mohawk Pride Time”. The Student Activist Group is partnering with the Mason City High School Student Senate to sponsor a listening post and panel discussion on safety.

Student participants will meet at the front entrance of the high school at 12:30 p.m. and walk outside, weather permitting, to the gym. A student-led question and answer listening post and panel discussion is planned to provide students with an opportunity to voice their concerns, questions, and statements regarding the safety of our school and how they can make a difference. Several local and state representatives will be present to answer questions. Those representatives scheduled to participate are:

State Senator Amanda Ragan
State Representative Sharon Steckman
Mason City Mayor Bill Schickel
Mason City Chief of Police Jeff Brinkley
Mason City Superintendent of Schools Dave Versteeg

This student led activity is optional for students.  Students not participating will report to Mohawk Pride Time and period 5 as normal.  An invitation was sent to parents with details of the event including an explanation of the purpose of the event.

Parents are welcome to attend as listeners and are required to RSVP to the high school office.
