MASON CITY – Clear Lake’s Scott Flory says he’s not in consideration for the City Administrator job in Mason City.
Officials in Mason City continue to search for a new City Administrator after the departure last Summer of Brent Trout for Topeka, Kansas.
A fruitless search costing about $6,000 was undertaken by the new city council and mayor this year in an attempt to fill the position.
Speculation abounded from the start that Clear Lake’s accomplished Administrator, Scott Flory, would be a top candidate for the open position.
However, to quell rumors, Mr. Flory told NIT this morning he is not in the running at this time.
“The City of Mason City means a lot to me and I value the working relationship I’ve established with many Mason Citians over the 17 years I’ve been in N. Iowa,” Mr. Flory explained. “I think the CA position is a terrific opportunity for the right, person. But, I am not under consideration for the position.”
Currently, Mason City officials do appear to have one candidate they are pursuing, but NIT is told by acting Administrator Kevin Jacobson that the person’s identity “can’t be released yet due to confidentiality clause.”
A decision on the hiring of this person could come as before April 17.
Rumor has it that it’s a tie for the new city admin. Robin, John, Bill, and loyal followers are going to flip a coin…. Phil Chodur or the present mall owner (yes, the one who owes back taxes)! Either one will play (steal) well with our wonderful “honest” leaders!

He did submit a resume, according to my source, but was unwilling to go through a particular selection process put together by Bill Schickel.Schickel wanted him to attend various meet & greet functions and he was unwilling to do that.
If he wasn’t willing to follow the same guidelines that the other candidates had to then he shouldn’t be considered. Just my opinion.
Well I would have rather been more accommodating to a high quality candidate like Flory than get the 5 losers we had to pick from. You are why we are stuck in neutral and going backwards. Yeah, forget about the guy that got the deal done with McKesson (I live in MC and work there).
Flory was a choice and showed interest by attending MC council meetings. The two brain child’s Bill Shickel and John Lee had their chance but dismissed him. The $6000.00 attempt was just a rouse and waste of time and money by Bill, Paul and John. That is why the city is now in this poor position. Flory is better off not to have to deal with these morons.
You’re correct, but I know John l and he wanted him very badly to come here. It was Bill Schickel that undermined the Council on this one.
And your city leaders pocketed big kick backs in all of those failed attempts to turn the town into a bigger crime ridden and stinkin’ place run by white coolar thieves……..and then a few blew out of here! The town they proclaimed to love and “REPRESENT!” Leaving behind the rest of the gang!
Your city leaders and it’s fellow cronies continue to line their pockets with your hard earned tax money. Instead of thinking about and improving life for the taxpayers and citizens ( thinking jobs, infastructure…etc.) they are suppose to represent….. it’s much easier for them AND personally profitable to just bend you over and rob you blindly…..and repeatedly! In broad daylight!

Whenever you point a finger, there are four more pointing back at you. It was not city leaders that turned away the casino, Prestage, or the Target Distribution Center. Mason City residents shoulder that blame by allowing a certain group of curmudgeons to effectively set city policy by way of their childish antics at city hall meetings.

Mason City is small town with some people in charge thinking they know it all,when in fact they are just one big sponge group of 5.Can anyone just one on the Council and Mayor stand up and have a spine.Hell they can get anything done with the biggest property in Town (Southbridge).Clock ticking they fought how to get free $ from state.Wonder still the problem with area not many jobs that pay more than 12-13$ hr.I would like too see a story done on the very low wages in area.Would like to see Companies see how low their wages look when they are printed for area people to see. Local village idiot that is how you better it for everyone.Just because few got the small amount of good jobs they think it’s great for everyone.Companies and business owners that pay 80’s/90’s wages look in mirror,should be ashamed of themselves,but yet they complain low skilled people are the problem,not true the problem is there is no loyalty to workers.And this also is in part the problem with immigration they want the cheap labor but they don’t want to see them.They are doing the jobs that USA refuse to do for that wage.Fact think about it.You don’t like to look at welfare people,so your lucky or had better circumstance.Not everyone has $ for college,but that doesn’t mean hard work shouldn’t be a way to make healthy living.In my younger days was able to make a hell of living off hard work.No shamers never been on Welfare just worked whole life,but it getting real hard in noth Iowa.
So why did the “failed 5” have to consent to public disclosure of their identities and this candidate does not? If I were the gentleman front garner, who was the only employed candidate, I would be calling my attorney regarding the inconsistency.
My husband is one of the 5 original finalists for the position. Thank you for your concern, however I don’t happen to agree. We have lived in 3 different towns where my husband was city admin (for a continuous and combined 23 years total) and the interview/hiring process has been the same. At some point, you know that your name will be made public and you agree to that if you are interested in pursuing the job. The very public Meet & Greet is a way for the council members, mayor, department heads and interested citizens to meet and speak with the finalists in an informal setting. That forum allows them to see how the individuals handle themselves- interacting with the public, taking questions from press, being put in perhaps a slightly awkward situation and put under pressure, if you will. My husband & I have been married nearly 30 years and we are very much a united team. The Meet & Greet also allowed ME to get a feel for the individuals that would be working most closely with my husband on a day to day basis if he were to be offered the position. While Mason City was interviewing my husband, I was “interviewing” the people who were at the Meet and Greet as well. Those impressions are very important when deciding if a move is right for us as a family or not. My own personal experience has been that the process works well and both sides are happy with each other when the finalist is chosen. Ideally, the city council members are all in agreement with each other on who is offered the job in the end. The CA position is difficult enough without having the full support of that city’s mayor and council members.
Although not following the typical process, this council has reasons for the decisions it has made in their search for their next city administrator. They are obligated to make the best choice for Mason City and I believe that they will, whoever it ends up being.
A blind man can see the taxpayer’s monies being pissed away by the “chosen few” and no one in Mason City has the balls or heart to do the right thing? Bring in some state or federal investigators and put those in leadership positions and their crony friends behind bars and clean up the city! Robin, John, Bill and loyal followers need some serious prison time. Time to review and think about who they have f**cked over…..the hardworking taxpayers of Mason City!
NIT needs to carefully evaluate and do an editorial on this lack of transparency. Finalists are always revealed publicly. I’m sure the earlier 5 would have preferred to be not revealed. This is bizarre. Someone call the State Ombudsman office.

The fruitless search costing $6000 really saved the city money. By not hiring anyone, the city is saving $10,000-$12,000 a month.
No it’s not. Jacobson got $26,000 twice on top of his salary. Stecker also a big increase. I would have been fine with Flory.
Smart move by Flory, who in their right mind would want to work for the ass-clowns that are in charge in this city. Especially with this RCR clusterf*ck that is going on.
I don’t care what the money difference is, Trout made a hair over $150K per year and Flory is making about $110 K per year in Clear lake.
In my opinion, $40 K per year increase is not worth the bullshit and grief.

I think it was a mistake by our Mayor and Council not to pursue this person vigorously. I am very disappointed that he is not under consideration. He would have been a smooth transition.
