Threat rumor at Mason City High School sends police to investigate

MASON CITY – A rumor of a threat at the Mason City High School connected to today’s planned pep assembly sent police to investigate.

Classes and events are being held as usual at the Mason City High School despite a possible threat received in connection to the pep assembly planned for today. The Mason City Mohawk girls basketball team is heading to Des Moines to play in the state tournament tonight.

According to a statement from the school district, police have been unable to substantiate the rumor.  Police are at the school now and will remain there for some time.

More details to follow as they become available.

In the wake of the threat, a Mason City father said “Better safe than sorry, I told my kid to go to the office and explain that she is leaving. I don’t give a damn what they say.”

Later Monday, Mason City police released this statement:

On Monday, February 26, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. the Mason City Police Department responded to the Mason City High School on a report of a social media threat of violence that was to occur at an afternoon pep rally.

Our department met with Mason City Community School District officials to help make decisions about the balance of the school day.  We also began an investigation into the social media post.  We supported the MCCSD decision to have the pep rally, based on the information known to us at the time.  Additional officers were present at the school for the balance of the school day and the pep rally.

MCPD personnel are continuing to investigate the incident at this time.  If you have information about this incident, we ask that you call the Mason City Police Department, 641-421-3636, and ask for Criminal Investigation Division Lieutenant Rich Jensen.  We will have more information for release as the investigation continues.

I don’t think taking officers off the street is a good idea. I think putting someone from the National Guard would be a better idea.

maybe we should see if the VFW could fire up the old cannon out front and move it to the front doors of the high school. seems as good a idea as the worthless ideas listed below

They need to start by realizing that ideas that make you feel good and don’t really serve any real safety is more dangerous than doing nothing at all. For instance having ONE resource officer for all the Mason City schools does basically nothing to keep kids safe. But the administration likes the idea because it’s cheap and they think it covers their ass. The adults are going to have to take over and keep the kids safe !! You need people trained with weapons at every school until then the kids are sitting ducks….

Or maybe we could pass tougher gun laws.

You are utterly clueless with your knee jerk reactive comments Allen.

Now, isn’t that calling the kettle black, you moron.

Copycats? If the rumor is found out to be true, and they catch the person, a good old fashion ass whipping might be in order.

Hey Allen, we should start with the Dumb Ass that called you clueless.

I probably would have done that in my younger days, but now you can’t pick on the mentally challenged..

Hey Allen, pretty sad when your only friend is the old geezer from the north end…haha

Here you are, the classic example of mentally Challenged.

All this over a rumor? Snowflakes at work.
