MASON CITY – A fake news class set to be taught by professor John Skipper of the Globe Gazette was cancelled due to low registrations.
The class, offered through NIACC, was to be taught this past Monday evening at the Mason City Library. Schooling students in the specifics of fake news was supposed to be John Skipper of the Globe Gazette, who claims in the class description to work in the “real news” business – but some in town would argue the class perfectly fits the way he actually has reported news over the years.

Skipper, possessing a PhD level of knowledge in fake news after years of experience at the Globe Gazette, was all set to perfectly articulate in the class how fake news was created, how to spot it and why it exists. Drawing from his decades of toiling at the nearly-defunct newspaper, he was to offer a run-down on the fake news industry itself.
Despite this enrapturing, riveting content, NIT is told that registration and interest in Skipper’s fake news class was so low that NIACC cancelled the whole thing. Registration cost was just $20 – but the unemployment rate is just 3% in Cerro Gordo county, so folks may have been tied up at work and too busy to attend.
John Skipper’s tenure in the “real news” business is tenuous, at best, as he announced this week he is no longer a “full-time” employee at the Globe Gazette as of this month. He will instead become a freelancer who occasionally contributes columns.

Now, now. We don’t KNOW that Skipper was demoted (or fired?) from his full-time job. We do know that the newspaper business is in big trouble, and the Globe is the poster child for cutbacks and outsourcing. In my experience, having worked at the Globe for years, myself, they have routinely axed dead weight and then later, when said dead weight is really desperate for any sort of income, the Globe then offers them a ‘new’ position at an ‘altered’ rate of pay that is advantageous to the Globe and much less so for dead weight employee. I saw it happen time and again. So it is my guess that Skipper was actually fired or laid off, in reality, and then they offered him this lower position to save face.
Tell us about the conditions of your seperation from the Globe Marquardt instead of speculating about Skip.
Quite the embarrassing article to say the least. Why not take the high road once in a while and just report stories as they actually are and not what someone perceives them to be?
Did NIACC send out a press release stating the class was cancelled due to low registration numbers?
If Mr. Skipper is available for employment, why not hire him on a part-time basis?
I’ll answer your three questions, just like I answered all of Skipper’s fake news questions, previously:
1. Sounds boring.
2. Nope. Our sources relayed to the newsroom what took place.
3. Skipper blew his chance at a position at NIT when he didn’t act on the first offer to be my coffee boy. Now it’s clear that even the Globe will barely keep him around. Offer rescinded.
