DES MOINES – A bill is advancing in the Iowa Legislature that would help train police to not commit racial profiling when investigating possible crimes.
Senate Study Bill 1177 is relating to law enforcement profiling and aims to help law enforcement round up data on interactions with citizens. It is the purpose of the bill to prohibit racial and ethnic profiling in law enforcement, to foster trust and cooperation with law enforcement in Iowa communities, and to create a safer state for all Iowans, law enforcement and citizens alike. It calls for standardizing collection and centralizing the compilation and reporting of officer stop and compliant data. It also calls for providing for officer training and creating a community policing advisory board with 20 members.
Some minorities say some law enforcement behavior must be modified. They point to, for example, the disparate treatment by officers or a stop for which the person’s race, color, ethnicity, religion, or national origin was considered or relied upon or was a motivating factor in the officer’s decision to make the stop.
On Wednesday, a Senate subcommittee recommended amendment and passage by a 3-0 vote.
The Senate Judiciary Committee will next take a look at the bill.

I am against police brutality against citizens. Some law enforcement personal are professional, but there are far to many in law enforcement that are power freaks that over step their boundaries all the time.
How about passing laws to incarcerate law officers that abuse the people they are supposed to protect and serve. Huh???

I feel for you guys. I’ve been around for half a century and cops have never pestered me. In fact, my limited interaction with LE has almost always been initiated by me and on every single instance been to my satisfaction.
I must be really lucky and you must have really bad luck. Either that or some sort of profiling. What do you think?
so what about profiling based on other demographic factors such age, sex and, most important, socioeconomic status? it is a statistical fact that the bulk of violent crimes are committed by young males living in poverty. i feel pretty confident arguing that the afro-american over-representation in police stop statistics is driven not so much by racial as by socioeconomic profiling. you don’t see a lot of preppy looking brown engineering majors being stopped and frisked, but plenty of black gangbangers and not so few white trash hillbillies either.
There’s 325 million people in America. There is 37 million black people. What do think? Discrimination against crime. Cased closed!
