Just read the CR Gazette article on Fran McCaffery’s contract being extended and the buyout increased by over 100% in Nov. Then kept secret till now. A $5.4M increase in the
buyout is a hell of a good reason to hide it. Plus another year. Quietly pulled off behind the scenes in Nov. 2017. Transparency 101 as taught / practiced at Un. Of Iowa Athletic Dept. But please, buy tickets and make donations. We love you and respect (need) your $$ support.
In eight years we are told that as long as a head Coach is not a thief or crooked recruiter that is our values and all we expect from a UI athletic coach. Don’t worry about
ever finishing first in the Big Ten Conf. Or win the annual tournament . Make it to the inflated NCAA basketball tournament or lesser NIT and that is big stuff. Come home
After the first or second game once every ten years. That is as good as we can ever expect.
So with such low expectations for titles why the worry and need to have $10.2M buyout? Who else of the Div. I prime time contenders would come after such coach with a 8 year record of NO conference titles, BTT title or a sweet 16 appearance?
This secretive behavior was to hide a fat $10.2M perk intended to make it financially tough for little UI to make a change in the men’s basketball head coach position. Even worse now that this season is another bust.
To the Iowa fans, suck it up. This is as good as you will get. Titles are for others.
The UI Athletic Dept. million dollar club insiders first priority is to protect and serve ($$$$) each other. Barta just proved it again.

Schools of higher education are now profit centers. Private banks are making a killing in profits. Books are a big time racket on campuses. And all this heavy handedness within the last decade. Wait for it. In 5 years this amount will seem like mere bread crumbs. Another case of the razzle dazzle.
I agree with you Pat, this was a moronic move by Barta! I was just beside myself when I heard this, why now, why at this time when the team is doing so poorly? Don’t give me the excuse that “we are rebuilding this year.” It is College basketball, you have to rebuild every year! Don’t tell me we can’t to better at the UI than Fran McCaffery. Same story with the football program.
They claim the money made from sports goes back into the sports programs and pays the high salary’s of the coaches. If there is that much money the coach should be held to a reasonable amount and the balance returned to the state to fund all education.
