BURLINGTON – An Iowa man has died from blunt force trauma from falling down a flight of stairs, state officials say, before he was reported missing.

On January 12, 2018, the Burlington Police Department was called to investigate the discovery of a dead body in the basement of 704 S. Central Avenue, Burlington, IA. The decedent was identified as fifty three (53) year old Ricky Dean WIXOM. On October 10, 2017, prior to the discovery of WIXOM, his family filed a missing person’s report. On January 12, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to assist with the investigation.

The homeowner of 704 S. Central Avenue informed law enforcement that in September 2017, WIXOM worked on the basement stairs of the residence. WIXOM had never been heard from or seen since working on the basement stairs.

On January 13, 2018, an autopsy was conducted at the University of Iowa Health and Clinic (UIHC) Decedent Care Center. The medical examiner ruled WIXOM’s Cause of Death to be blunt for injuries consistant with a fall and the Manner of Death-Accidental.

After a complete and throrough investigation, coupled with the findings from the autopsy, WIXOM’s death has been ruled accidental.

The aforementioned was a joint investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Burlington Police Department, the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner and the Des Moines County Attorney’s Office.
