Convicted domestic abuser fresh out of prison caught with ammo

MASON CITY – A convicted domestic abuser who was sent to prison earlier this year was caught with ammo in his pocket and faces another felony charge.

A Cerro Gordo county deputy conducted a traffic stop at about 1:19 AM on December 22 near Lark Avenue and 250th Street. The vehicle was stopped for no plates and no center brake light. During an investigation, the driver was searched and ammunition was found in his pocket. As a result, 34-year-old Christopher John Heyden of Manly was arrested for possession of ammunition as a domestic abuser and driving while barred. He was taken to the county jail, where remains held at this time awaiting a court appearance set for December 29.

Sheriff Kevin Pals tells NIT that “We will not release any more information on the ammunition unless it is in the court file that is filed by the County Attorney.”

Records show Heyden was charged with felony drug possession in February of 2017. He was released from jail, but a number of warrants for his arrest were issued after he failed to show up in court. Later, the charge was reduced to only second-offense possession of a controlled substance. In May of this year, he was sent to prison on a two-year sentence – but was apparently released. He was caught with marijuana by the Iowa State Patrol back in 2009.

Hayden was convicted of domestic assault in Cerro Gordo county in 2012 and put on probation. He later violated that probation and was briefly sent to prison.
