Iowa State Named FWAA National Team of the Week

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team was named the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) National Team of the Week following its victory over previously-unbeaten No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman.

This marks the fifth time that Iowa State has earned this recognition since its inception in 2002.

The Cardinal and Gold were an easy nod for the committee this week. The Cyclones toppled No. 3 Oklahoma 38-31. The win was Iowa State’s first in Norman since 1990 and the first victory over an AP top-5 opponent on the road. ISU also snapped an 18-game losing streak against the Sooners.

Iowa State received a number of outstanding individual efforts to take down OU. Redshirt senior Joel Lanning served on defense, offense and special teams. The Ankeny, Iowa native amassed 78 total snaps. On the defensive side of the ball, Lanning tallied eight stops, a fumble recovery and a sack. Offensively, he was pivotal in short yardage situations for his team. He rushed for 35 yards on nine attempts and picked up 25 yards through the air on 2-3 attempts.

In his first career start, redshirt senior Kyle Kempt was invaluable to Iowa State’s upset bid. Kempt completed 18 of his 24 attempts for 343 yards and three touchdowns. He led the Iowa State offense on four touchdown drives of 70 yards or more, and had throwing strikes of 57, 54 and 46 yards.

Sophomore running back David Montgomery churned out a career day for the Cyclones. The do-it-all back racked up 55 yards on 17 carries including a touchdown. Montgomery set career highs in receptions and receiving yards, hauling in a team-high seven passes for 89 yards. In total, Montgomery accounted for 144 total yards on the day.

The Football Writers Association of America’s National Team of the Week was created as a part of the Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll in 2002. Since then, it has been awarded each week during the regular season. Various committees to vote on this award have included members of the FWAA All-America Committee, the association’s board of directors and its past presidents.
