Masson and Weaver seek third ward council seat in special election

MASON CITY – There will be just 2 names on the ballot in the upcoming election for the Mason City third ward council seat.

A special election was earlier approved for the vacant third ward council seat in Mason City, which opened up when Brett Schoneman resigned and moved out of town. Just two citizens of the third ward are candidates – Joshua Masson, who announced his candidacy in July, and Max Weaver, who filed his election papers last week.  Both have run for office in the past; Masson ran for city council in 2015 (ward 3) and 2016 (at-large) while Weaver has run for council and Mayor (successfully and unsuccessfully) in previous elections.

Election day is September 19.  Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.

First day to vote by absentee ballot in the county auditor’s office is Friday, September 1.

Polling Places and Vote Centers for the Mason City Special Election, September 19, 2017:

– First Covenant Church, 411 S Ohio Ave, Mason City
– Mason City School Administration Building, 1515 S Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City
– Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, 220 N Washington Ave, Mason City

A resident of Ward 3 in Mason City can vote at any one of the above vote centers on Election Day.

Two things for sure, Max we didn’t know you were THAT powerful!!
To keep things from growing around here, how kingly is that!

And sorry unless you are some freak living in your mother’s basement
You know the town was waaay more vibrant when there was a strip joint, of course amoung other things. Don’t like strip joints stay out of em! Who cares. So dumb.By the way, it was an example of back when that WEAVER made. So stay tucked away in the basement it won’t happen.

Vote for the King of all Power!

Growth of this city? Who gives a shit. Give or take its been the same for years. Obviously it’s still a town and we make it work. If people don’t like it they probably would have moved on by now.

Why do you stay then? No one person is responsible for this . Let’s have that list too….that Weaver single handedly kept something from here. I do recall this latest group representing us wanted a prison and the hog fiasco. Wow that rocks! I know Weaver was opposed..makes sense. Although most of our criminals on board now could have been the first to take residency at said prison. You know why.

Get over growing this place like that. Everyone is doing fine.
Funny though, the haters of Max want an ice pad that only so many will enjoy…hmmmm that’s NOT GROWING that’s keeping right with in your little world. Open Your minds haters!

WEAVER no doubt!

I appreciate your honesty and your desire for this community is congruent with your actions – you say you want Mason City to remain unchanged and you’re voting for the guy that will do that (Weaver). I have no problems with you. It’s all the other dullards around here that say they want change, but then support a guy like Weaver who is incapable of effecting change,.

I think this town sucks and needs major changes. Its population slowly dwindles and decades of declining population have left a largely downtrodden population that is too stupid to realize they’re stupid (evidence of this can be found by reading 95% of the posts on these message boards). The town is full of derelict property. There are few meaningful job opportunities and pay is low because there is a huge supply of unskilled labor relative to demand (as a result of decades of de-population where most of the educated and skilled workforce left years ago). There is a overpowering negative attitude in this community and any sort of change is viewed extremely negatively.

Alas, I was born here and wax sentimental for the place. I want to see it succeed, but that is a huge uphill battle. I commend anyone for serving in city government here as it is a TOXIC environment thanks to the small group of very vocal curmudgeons.

Hate to say it but Mason city and Charles city big growth seems to be imports from chitcago/deadtroit who will be subsidized by the government/taxpayers to get their monthly ebt/welfare money to spend at your retail businesses – hell you don’t need more businesses you just need more import wealth coming in. And to think I’m not a democrap and I fingered out what their up to – Maybe that old hag Merkel should visit Mason – I think that old crooked HAG CLINTON must already have – just Obomonomics folks !

Then let your logics take hold not your hate.

Really? Haven’t learned anything? Weaver is the clear choice.
I would like a list of his bullying and scams you haters claim.

We have to have experience and knowledge sometime in this city. Agree or not with him.

Be honest he just irks you. Doesn’t mean he isn’t the right one for the job. Unless it’s because he’s on to you or will expose dirty deeds.
I’m that case get your enemy closer.

Gotta vote! For Weaver!

My top priority for Mason City government: make this town grow again. Knowing this, any person of average or better intelligence knows why I wouldn’t vote for Weaver. For Pete’s sake, the guy has literally chased off employers and has never brought any growth prospects to the table (unless you want to count a few jobs working as a stripper downtown).

Your comment is totally false. The only people who have hampered growth and jobs coming to Mason City is you and your elite group (The Chamber of Crime) that hate unions, wage increases, and meaningful jobs for the working man/women.

All the Chamber cares about are Public Private Financing projects for the benefit of keeping Mason City small. Just look at the ridiculous River City Renaissance project that offers nothing but service jobs.

Then some bufoo said employer’s needs weren’t being met here. Pay a man/women a decent wage and their needs will be met. You get what you pay for.

Buddy. Your attitude completely exemplifies why this area does not grow! We have accomplished, smart people telling you why this area cannot attract jobs and you choose to ignore their findings and instead try to blame it on a secret society, or a chamber of commerce. If you owned a large scale business, would you set up shop in a growing, progressive city that is able to offer financial incentives (there are plenty of cities out here that will) or set up shop in Mason City where you’ll receive limited financial incentives (because of the attitudes from people like yourself and Weaver) and you’ll have difficulty finding qualified employees? You know full well what the answer is to this question.

So it really comes down to whether we do something in Mason City to make it a more attractive place for employers or continue to let the curmudgeons like Weaver continue to effectively set city policy and endure a few more decades of population decline.

Mason city is the ‘star city’ across a wide region. It will someday return to it’s former glory and rightly so. The original downtown mall was 1st planned to go along highway 18 west south of where Pure Pleasures is located. Once Orvis crossed Eisenhower Mason city and Clear Lake were meant to be one. Imagine how much money is being generated on Indian head drive aka Walmart corner. The future looks bright for Mason City as it should be. Don’t cash in your chips just yet…

When your sick, do you take the advice of a doctor or take the advice of the town blowhard? Why would any other problem be any different?!?! When your town is slowing withering away, do you seek the advice of commmunity planners and economists? Or take the advice of conservative talk radio personalities and Max Weaver?!?!

Sir/Madam — You are thinking small to say Mason City elected officials are corrupt – I Believe they were referring to 75% of a ALL elected officials (That’s mostly a known fact worldwide) can be compromised (owned) if the dollar figure is right. Seems like the teachers in DC have spread their skills right down to the smallest of cities. In our area the most abuse is at the county supervisor level . Altough I would’nt trust a couple of our puke city council members as far as I could throw’em . Hillery wannabeeee’s

Some guy below writes, “Take a honest look at the needs of employers in today’s economy”. Then he says the, “THE INVISIBLE HAND IS SPEAKING”. Finally we have someone that admits their existence.

The people of Mason City have been listening to your INVISIBLE HAND for several decades. We aren’t buying your snake oil any longer.

What is really telling? The INVISIBLE HAND never says, “Take an honest look at the needs of the working men and women in today’s economy”.

You have some nerve calling out Watchdog!

Please, Take a basic college level economics course. There you will learn about the invisible hand. Spoiler alert: it’s not a secret society, it explains why markets behave the way they do.

Sadly, it is your college economic course’s that have this country messed up. I am betting you hate capitalism too. Spread the wealth up to all your Democratic Wall Street buddies isn’t for me. I see what your “text book” economics have done to the country and it’s put us in the hole.

Try some supply and demand economics. Stop all the public private socialism that has been scamming the po’folks and let free enterprise loose in this country. Your employer’s needs would be filled just fine if they would raise their wages, but of course that might mean a few less dollars in their pocket. I like the idea of raising wages to spread the wealth around.

Mason City could grow if you would throw your text books in the garbage and let freedom ring. If you were smart you would kick your INVISIBLE HAND buddies in the butt.

You do realize that Nothing in your post gives a realistic idea for Mason City to grow? You talk about supply and demand, then contradict yourself by talking about artificially raising wages. Supply and demand DICTATES wages.

You now claim that the invisible hand is a distinct economic theory from a supply and demand models. The invisible hand recognizes supply and demand and uses it to explain how markets allocate resources.

I think a bigger issue in this country is that everyone’s vote counts exactly the same. We can have a productive, intelligent, college educated worker that has just as much of a vote as a dullard who thinks the invisible hand is a secret society. Sigh. This is how we end up with people like Max Weaver and Terry Branstad in political office.

Supply and demand will raise wages. No where did I say Government should raise wages. You make up a lot of stuff I see. Me thinks you need to go back and get some more college.

Anonymous

Let’s be more precise. Supply and demand models reveal that wages will reach a equilibrium point when the supply of labor equals the demand for labor. I’m confused as to how you are proposing a wage increase in Mason City would/should occur? I also fail to see how this wage increase you propose would make Mason City grow or offer better job opportunities. Basic economic theory would suggest the opposite. Please enlighten us…

To make Mason City grow, something has to change with its demographic profile to better align with growth industries. Mason City is old, white, and not well educated – growth industries require youthful, diverse, and college educated work forces. Until this changes (which it won’t with curmudgeons like Weaver effectively setting city policy and making a circus act out of city council meetings), Mason City will continue to attract low paying retail, food service, and Ag processing type jobs (invisible hand -it’s speaking, but no one is listening).

In response to Anonymous,

No, Max is not a bully. He does get frustrated at the back room deals and skullduggery that goes on at the expense of the taxpayers. That gets old in a hurry!

Max is capable of learning just like all of are when it comes to “job growth”. It sure isn’t Max Weavers fault that Mason City is “withering” as you put it. That blame is totally on the shoulders of the Chamber of Commence and the elitists that run City Hall from behind the scenes.

Quite possibly the dumbest post written on the NIT boards today. Do you really think there is a ‘secret society’ holding back job growth in Mason City?!?!?!

Take a honest look at the needs of employers in todays economy and then compare that to demographics and macro economic indicators in Mason City. There you will find why this town does not grow (THE INVISIBLE HAND IS SPEAKING). Many smart people have told us how to go about rectifying this problem, but you’d rather take the easy road and allow the town blowhards like Weaver to continue to effectively set city policy.

A wise man once said that you don’t have to be smart to be successful, you just need to do what smart people tell you to do. Start listening to smart people and not blowhards.

Now that was one “windy” reply. Talk about a blowhard!

You obviously don’t know anything about the history of Mason City. No secret society needed. Mason City suffers from the anti union and anti growth polices from decades ago. It’s alive and well today.

Demographics and macro economic indicators are nothing more than highbrow BS to make us believe you think there is some magic formula to growth and jobs. Well there ain’t!!

It just takes a positive attitude, long range planning, and you guys get the hell out of the way of progress.

Demographics and macro economic indicators? Now that is what we call educated ignorance!

I didn’t know that the citizens think that he should be rewarded with a council seat just because he voiced opposition to the pork processing plant and the other dozen new businesses. Poor reason to elect someone who has a black mark by his name from his previous stints on the council. Plus, since he associates himself with the likes of people such as willet, peterson, and wolfram who are nothing but bullies, that is another red flag reason to vote someone else into office.

Reading your response you are clearly the bully on here. Name calling and nasty comments put you in the category of a non-thinker and non-leader. You clearly hate those that are successful.

By the way, I have met many intelligent people that aren’t smart enough to come in out of the rain. Intelligence does not make you successful.

Toyota absolutely, positively, 100% would not come to Mason City. Do you uneerstand why? Think about the needs of this type of employer and let us know what problems you see with the north Iowa workforce

You do realize Toyota/Mazda is actively seeking a US location for a manufacturing plant and the only Iowa city under consideration is Cedar Rapids. Think about that and let us know why you think this is.

Let’s have intelligent discourse rather than namecalling.

Under that logic, only big cities can entice new businesses? People wouldn’t move or relocate for a new job that offers benefits and good wages? Company’s like that won’t come to mason footy because of our shitty leadership and absolutely crooked chamber of commerce

Answer the question honestly if you ever want to figure out how to make this city grow. Toyota will not come to Mason City because they would not be able to find the workforce they require nor does the current populace have the stomach for the incentive package that would be required to lure Toyota from the thousands of other cities that will give incentives. .

We’d like to see the proven facts supporting evidence of those elected officials in mason city that received “bribes”. Rumors or just speculation is not accepted as proof of fact. Tired of all you who claim of corruption but never have physical solid proof of your accusations. Without hard evidence you are just as guilty of being dishonest as those you accuse of the same. Just because you disagree with someone’s position doesn’t make them crooked. weaver has his own agenda and it doesn’t support the majority of the citizens wants. His agenda is just as dangerous to the city.

Ironically, these smart, productive, and successful folks are the one’s that pay most all the taxes and use few government services. This embodies the the biggest problem with our government, if you ask me – And that is the fact that everybody’s vote counts exactly the same.
