MASON CITY – There will be just 2 names on the ballot in the upcoming election for the Mason City third ward council seat.
A special election was earlier approved for the vacant third ward council seat in Mason City, which opened up when Brett Schoneman resigned and moved out of town. Just two citizens of the third ward are candidates – Joshua Masson, who announced his candidacy in July, and Max Weaver, who filed his election papers last week. Both have run for office in the past; Masson ran for city council in 2015 (ward 3) and 2016 (at-large) while Weaver has run for council and Mayor (successfully and unsuccessfully) in previous elections.
Election day is September 19. Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.
First day to vote by absentee ballot in the county auditor’s office is Friday, September 1.

– First Covenant Church, 411 S Ohio Ave, Mason City
– Mason City School Administration Building, 1515 S Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City
– Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, 220 N Washington Ave, Mason City
A resident of Ward 3 in Mason City can vote at any one of the above vote centers on Election Day.

I appreciate your honesty and your desire for this community is congruent with your actions – you say you want Mason City to remain unchanged and you’re voting for the guy that will do that (Weaver). I have no problems with you. It’s all the other dullards around here that say they want change, but then support a guy like Weaver who is incapable of effecting change,.
I think this town sucks and needs major changes. Its population slowly dwindles and decades of declining population have left a largely downtrodden population that is too stupid to realize they’re stupid (evidence of this can be found by reading 95% of the posts on these message boards). The town is full of derelict property. There are few meaningful job opportunities and pay is low because there is a huge supply of unskilled labor relative to demand (as a result of decades of de-population where most of the educated and skilled workforce left years ago). There is a overpowering negative attitude in this community and any sort of change is viewed extremely negatively.
Alas, I was born here and wax sentimental for the place. I want to see it succeed, but that is a huge uphill battle. I commend anyone for serving in city government here as it is a TOXIC environment thanks to the small group of very vocal curmudgeons.
Hate to say it but Mason city and Charles city big growth seems to be imports from chitcago/deadtroit who will be subsidized by the government/taxpayers to get their monthly ebt/welfare money to spend at your retail businesses – hell you don’t need more businesses you just need more import wealth coming in. And to think I’m not a democrap and I fingered out what their up to – Maybe that old hag Merkel should visit Mason – I think that old crooked HAG CLINTON must already have – just Obomonomics folks !

My top priority for Mason City government: make this town grow again. Knowing this, any person of average or better intelligence knows why I wouldn’t vote for Weaver. For Pete’s sake, the guy has literally chased off employers and has never brought any growth prospects to the table (unless you want to count a few jobs working as a stripper downtown).
Your comment is totally false. The only people who have hampered growth and jobs coming to Mason City is you and your elite group (The Chamber of Crime) that hate unions, wage increases, and meaningful jobs for the working man/women.
All the Chamber cares about are Public Private Financing projects for the benefit of keeping Mason City small. Just look at the ridiculous River City Renaissance project that offers nothing but service jobs.

We have accomplished, smart people telling you why this area cannot attract jobs and you choose to ignore their findings and instead try to blame it on a secret society, or a chamber of commerce. If you owned a large scale business, would you set up shop in a growing, progressive city that is able to offer financial incentives (there are plenty of cities out here that will) or set up shop in Mason City where you’ll receive limited financial incentives (because of the attitudes from people like yourself and Weaver) and you’ll have difficulty finding qualified employees? You know full well what the answer is to this question.
So it really comes down to whether we do something in Mason City to make it a more attractive place for employers or continue to let the curmudgeons like Weaver continue to effectively set city policy and endure a few more decades of population decline.
Mason city is the ‘star city’ across a wide region. It will someday return to it’s former glory and rightly so. The original downtown mall was 1st planned to go along highway 18 west south of where Pure Pleasures is located. Once Orvis crossed Eisenhower Mason city and Clear Lake were meant to be one. Imagine how much money is being generated on Indian head drive aka Walmart corner. The future looks bright for Mason City as it should be. Don’t cash in your chips just yet…

To make Mason City grow, something has to change with its demographic profile to better align with growth industries. Mason City is old, white, and not well educated – growth industries require youthful, diverse, and college educated work forces. Until this changes (which it won’t with curmudgeons like Weaver effectively setting city policy and making a circus act out of city council meetings), Mason City will continue to attract low paying retail, food service, and Ag processing type jobs (invisible hand -it’s speaking, but no one is listening).

I didn’t know that the citizens think that he should be rewarded with a council seat just because he voiced opposition to the pork processing plant and the other dozen new businesses. Poor reason to elect someone who has a black mark by his name from his previous stints on the council. Plus, since he associates himself with the likes of people such as willet, peterson, and wolfram who are nothing but bullies, that is another red flag reason to vote someone else into office.

You do realize Toyota/Mazda is actively seeking a US location for a manufacturing plant and the only Iowa city under consideration is Cedar Rapids. Think about that and let us know why you think this is.
