Iowa prison inmate found guilty after wife attempted to smuggle marijuana into Anamosa

ANAMOSA – An Iowa prisoner at the Anamosa state prison tried to work with his wife to smuggle marijuana into the facility, but got caught, and now has a longer prison stint to serve out.

Prison Inmate Tanner Meade was found guilty July 3 after attempting to introduce drugs into Anamosa State Penitentiary. Meade withdrew the previous plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to the class D felony offense of Furnishing a Controlled Substance to Inmates at a Detention Facility in violation of Iowa Code Sections 719.8.

The Jones County Court sentenced Meade to an indeterminate term not to exceed five years to the Iowa Department of Corrections. This term is to be served consecutively with the sentence he is currently serving. Meade’s wife, Angelica Meade, received a deferred judgment for Possession of Controlled substance. She will be placed on probation for 1 year.

The incident occurred during a March 11, 2017 visit during which Meade’s wife Angelica passed a balloon of marijuana, later found in Meade’s possession. The incident was investigated by Anamosa State Penitentiary staff, working in conjunction with Jones County Officials.

The Department of Corrections believes this sentence holds Meade and his visitor accountable for their actions while serving as a deterrent to others who might consider attempts to smuggle contraband into its facilities.
