Opinion: Discipline “is the hardest part of teaching”

My name is Dave Brown I attended the last school board meeting. I would like to say for me discipline is the hardest part of teaching. If you can ask ten teachers, principals or superintendents they will give you a different answer of how to handle the students. The best school in this area for discipline is the High School in Hampton. They have a Court Liaison Officer right in the school. He is good at his job. As a substitute teacher there I know what is expected of me and what I need to do in the classroom. They have a discipline policy and they follow it. If I tell the office I am having problems with a student I get support from the office. I have been in schools where I turn a student in to the office and they tell me I am not handling the student right.

Mason City is not the only school that bases their discipline on who your parents are. People in town have told me this has gone on for decades in Mason City. Clear Lake is known to do this also. There are other schools in the area that do it also. I have worked in a school (Clear Lake High School) where the seniors had been telling the principal to F off to his face since the students were juniors. I have worked in schools where the principal and superintendent were afraid of the parents. The High School Disciplinarian is the hardest job in the school system in my opinion.

When the meeting was over I asked Barb (principal at Hoover) if she was getting air conditioning in Hoover. She said they were. Then she says I didn’t get a contract in teaching this year. She said something about sometimes you have to move. I took it as a wise guy comment. Why do you think she felt the need to say that? I tried being nice to her and she comes back with a wise guy comment.

Maybe the new superintendent should get some different principals in the schools. Especially the ones the past superintendent hired.

Mason City expects substitute teachers to walk into a building and classroom and know exactly what to do. I am assuming the new superintendent is going too held to that standard. He shouldn’t need any help in doing his job. If he does maybe the school board should get rid of him.

I would also like to remind the school board that Scott Warren made a threatening remark directed at my family in the administration room approximately three years and four months ago. I think he should be removed from the School Board. It’s probably an ethics violation.

I pay taxes in worth county and I care if I have to buy MR Ward a new car every year and also I believe he should reside and pay taxes in worth county – after all that’s the people who pay him $3461.53 EVERY WEEK ! Blow your liberal bs elsewhere.

Amen!

Perhaps under Mr. Ward’s administration you would have learned proper capitalization and punctuation. How he spends his discretionary income is none of your business.

Dave Brown, your writing skills are not good enough to be teaching anywhere. You switch from present to past tense like a rapid-cycling bipolar patient. It drove me crazy reading this. Please find another profession that doesn’t involve writing skills.

Public servants are a burden on the private sector -you know -the wealth producers – public servants are non wealth producers – therefore I read it is a transfer of wealth from the private sector to the public sector – and as it seems the public sector is doing far better than the private sector —except those who receive subsides/grants and T I F money all taken from the private sector who are known as the wealth producers.

Exactly, the shenanigans are endless! And, J. H., Attorney at Law, claiming that well if their isn’t a paper trail then shit never happens. What kind of steaming pile of horseshit is that? As if administrators haven’t been trained in legality matters on how to reduce liability risks. Hell, J. H. Is probably the one behind the scenes counseling the administrators and/or superintendents. And, hello like the superintendents don’t meet monthly. Mr. Brown, I have no doubt has been black balled.

Ziplock bags full of crap sent through the mail often times are career killers.

My son attended Hampton//Dumont schools. I think the liaison you are speaking of is the emotional equivalant of the students he oversees. He not only lacks the temperment for the job that he thinks he has but the college credits as well.

Getting back to central springs (worthless black bartz territory) Steve Ward who is sup for what 7 years now is not even a worth county resident (lives in Greene,Ia. They pay him what $8-10k every year for mileage – No wonder he buys a nice new car every year – Fat cats – hell the school board members are hand picked and help get elected by the teachers union – for fact! some of them did not know that property taxes and increases in wages were paid for out of local property taxes. Keep em stupid and rake in the mooola $$$$$$$

Steve Ward is a phenomenal educator and administrator. He lives in Greene because he was the Super for Greene, Rudd-Rockford, Marble Rock, for years. He cares about the students and understands the real world. Who cares about his car buying habits ?? Totally irrelevant. It always amazes me when people makes comments from a place of ignorance and jealousy !

If the superintendent (wow! what a long word ) is a spineless snowflake then the whole school system is flakey. Seems these democrats can’t think for themselves

want to see a clear act of lack of discipline at home, that’s where it starts, at home. Ride a school bus and you will see it. if parents only knew

Put the brats in locked quiet rooms shut off the lights and lose the key problem solved

central springs complains that parents are not involved,, but try to enroll your kids in person, no enroll your student on line, want to stop in and talk to a teacher in person about if the kid is keeping up etc, no, email me please and look up your kids progress on line it is updated weekly.” usually 3-4 weeks behind on up posts” give the teacher permission to smack my kid if he is out of line or unruly, no that could lead to low self esteem this was all 15 years ago have things changed?

Dave Brown you are a tool. I’ve seen your complaints to area schools that point out what teachers are or are not doing all based on rumor so far fetched it’s laughable.

Mason City has a full time SRO on campus every day. No regular education student has ever spoken to any Clear Lake principal as you claim without disciplinary action. Ever. Furthermore, a simple review of public records will show you an obvious pattern of ineligibility and suspension for Clear Lake students of every economic class without regard to last name. Just more rumors you hear, or make up, that you think are true.

You like to complain a lot about teachers and your superior ability as compared to them. I know that your reputation as a substitute is very poor. Looking at your writing here it is obvious you don’t have basic English skills. Good substitutes don’t have to drive as far as you to work. Don’t you wonder why that is? Probably not, I’m sure you tell everyone that Hampton thinks you are the next Mr. Escalante. Please. A substitute teacher shouldn’t ever need a resource officer in the short time periods you are with students.

You have absolutely zero evidence of your claims and fall into the same category of rumor spreading gossip queens like too many people in this area. If Scott Warren threatened you, I’m sure you deserved it. I know exactly who you are. I’ve seen your email complaints to area superintendents, I’ve seen you at school board meetings. I’ve observed your poor teaching. A good teacher, full time or substitute, can teach in any circumstance without needing step by step instructions. You need those instructions per your own admission here. You are not a good teacher and a worse gossip. Do us all a favor and find something productive to do with yourself.

Thank you. As adults we know, or should have learned, that there are always two sides to every story…. at the very least. I appreciate your perspective and for taking the time to go on the record here. Your comments raise valid concerns regarding Mr. Browns story.

If I were Mr. Brown this is the last place I would take my complaints.

J.H., Attorney at Law, Who the hell are you to condemn someone for their opinion? Who are you to judge Mr. Brown’s opinions and the life he leads? He may not be perfect and he doesn’t have to be! Before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean. You are indeed a tool for trying to cloud the issue saying shit never happens in schools and if it does it’s well documented. I call Bullshit!

I think the teachers are afraid of being fired for administrating control in the classroom all part of the politically correct demorat controlled elected officials. Home schooling is best if you have the time.

Schools should not be responsible for discipline, and I’m talking about the way that Mr. Brown stated. Unfortunately, there are families out there that think their shit don’t stink, and their children never do wrong. The rest of us know that is not true. If you are a good responsible parent, you nip this kind of behavior in the bud. There are to many things that go wrong when a child is not disciplined by their parents, look around, if you are not blind to such things, you will see it, read about it every day. Despite what the government says about disciplining your children, good parents do it anyway. Our government should just take care of government, and leave parenting to parents.

Great comment Allen. It is very true and is common sense. That is why they will never do it.

Enlighten us Allen what specifically does the government say about parents disciplining their children?

Why would you care, mike, you don’t have any children. If you really want to know, look it up yourself.

You talk the talk but produce no facts to back up your claim. I will continue to wait for some concrete examples where the government has curtailed your parental rights regarding discipline of your children. High fives from LVS don’t count.

You know Mike you should really get your head out of your ass and try breathing.

Come on Allen. You know he is not smart enough to look it up himself. All he can do is ask you stupid questions.

I know, he just likes to attack other posters with anything that is against what the original comment is about. You see, from what I have been told, mike didn’t have a very good child, and it shows in his comments. I kind of feel sorry for him, but he doesn’t want to change his attitude, so when he attacks others, he feels good about himself. I’m sure you know people like that, sad, isn’t it.

Answer the question Allen. Many of us have been waiting.

Big drug bust on So. Pierce this morning. Cooking meth in the basement.

Hey Allen, the schools have more problems with parents that don’t give a shit rather than those who think their shit don’t stink as you claim.

It means Allen is on to people like you who are a disgrace to honesty and a liar, cheat and woman beater. Would you like us to continue Mike Fink? Are you still dealing drugs because we know you do. Maybe the police need to visit you again.
