ESTHERVILLE, IOWA – A man drove his car through the front of a HyVee store in Estherville Thursday morning, injuring two people.
On the 22nd of June at around 8:46 AM officers of the Estherville Police Department were dispatched to Hy-Vee located at 1221 Central Avenue for a vehicle that had just driven through the front of the store. Upon arriving on scene officers observed a white 1995 Chevy Lumina driven by Robert Stump of Estherville inside of the Hy-Vee store. Officers observed heavy damage to the outside and inside of the store.
After speaking with witnesses it was determined that the vehicle operated by Stump was attempting to leave the parking area of the store. After placing the vehicle into drive Stump accelerated into a parked unattended vehicle owned by John and Joan Swanson of Estherville and then continued through the front of the store. The vehicle then spun around inside of the store before coming to rest after striking a steel support beam inside of the store.
Stump was cited for Failure to Maintain Control of a motor vehicle and he did not sustain any injuries during the incident. Two individuals from inside of the store, Jimmie Jackson of Graettinger and Diana Vonhagen of Estherville, were transported to Avera Holy Family for non-incapacitating injuries.
Damages to Stump’s vehicle were estimated at around $3,500, the damages to Swanson’s vehicle was listed at $3,500, and the damages to the store were estimated at around $20,000. The Estherville Police Department was assisted on scene by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Estherville Ambulance Service, and the Estherville Fire Department.

I am sure she passed the test which is more than you can do. Be careful what you wish for. If all seniors are ever taken off the roads you taxes will be so high you won’t be able to afford to drive. Just because they are older doesn’t meant the are senile. I know lots of younger people that should never be allowed on the roads. The ones that text and drive are just some of them.
You would be amazed at how many family members are in denial when they are told their loved ones should not be driving. They think it’s okay if they “just drive in town”. They don’t want to hurt their feelings. This is a good example of why you need to take the car away.

How old was the fella who did this? No doubt he should have his license revoked due to his age and deteriorating mental capacity.

Another right foot pedal error part of the right foot braking epidemic. This was predictable and preventable. We have allowed those in charge of driver legislation and training to teach only the right foot braking method. They are forcing student drivers to use this method even though they know it is too complicated and difficult to mentally maintain with age, inefficient (poor reaction time) and dangerous (subject to right foot pedal error) compared to the safer and simpler left foot braking method. This even though there is No Scientific support let alone Scientific Comparisons to safer and simpler braking methods like the left foot braking method. The teaching of right foot braking on automatic vehicles must be banned. Reports issued by NHTSA (DOT HS 811 597 and 812 058) highlight the dangers of right foot braking on automatic vehicles. Score to date, 30,000 documented but probably closer to 150,000 dead, millions injured, and costs in the billions. What a price we are paying because of male drivers (both in and out of government), systemic belief in an obsolete method of braking an automatic car, the scientific foundation of which is “That’s the way it’s always been taught”! This is not about which braking method is safer but rather why they refuse to scientifically compare the two methods!
You seem knowledgeable regarding studies and statistics. Has there ever been a study completed on the number of drivers who should not be able to drive because of illness, injury, age who have been told not to drive by health care workers that continue to drive? How many of these drivers are involved in losing control because the do not have reaction time, cannot feel their feet or do not have the cognitive ability to drive?
