DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg kicked off the ninth annual Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger today by announcing this year’s goal of 50,000 meals for hungry children and families. Representatives of the Des Moines Symphony, the Food Bank of Iowa, Bank of the West, Casey’s General Stores, Hy-Vee, Inc., the Polk County Board of Supervisors and KCCI joined the governor and lieutenant governor for the official launch at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.
“The Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger shines a spotlight on the stark reality that not all Iowans have enough food to eat,” Gov. Reynolds said. “Donating non-perishable food items during this drive encourages all of us to care for our fellow Iowans and ensure that no one in need goes hungry.”
“Year after year, this drive helps draw attention to the Food Bank of Iowa and the important work they do putting meals on the tables of those who need it most,” Lt. Gov. Gregg said. “I cannot overstate the importance of this effort.”
The public is encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items at all metro Bank of the West and Hy-Vee store locations. Donations can also be made at the Des Moines Symphony’s 24th annual Yankee Doodle Pops on Monday, July 3. The concert takes place on the West Terrace of the Iowa State Capitol at 8:30 p.m.
All Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger donations of non-perishable food items will go to the Food Bank of Iowa. Monetary donations can be made at www.foodbankiowa.org/ydp. Each dollar donated buys four meals.
The Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger begins today and ends July 9.
