Open letter to John Skipper regarding Sunday’s column, “Mason City, it’s Time to Move on”

Dear John,

Your theme today is “move on.” How very nice. Close but no cigar; the human physiology is not wired to move on. If it were there would be no wars, no murders, no altercations, no anger… people would just “move on.” If you ever decide to stop writing, you could move seamlessly into selling aluminum siding. You could start out with windows then make your move to the holy grail… aluminum.

You gotta be joking. Seriously, you believe people are going to turn the other cheek? Look out the window… there are vile and evil people out there who will embrace you then eat your lunch. Did your editor, Mr. Mayberry “move on” when he attacked Todd Blodgett? All Todd did was invite the truth to the table in the recent Des Moines Register newspaper article by celebrated writer Reka Basu chronicling the Prestige debacle. Your own boss won’t follow your advice… why should anyone else?

This was a nightmare that ended with catastrophic consequences.

DAVID MAYBERRY VIA TWITTER
Let me answer that for you; hell no David Mayberry didn’t… he sacked Todd Blodgett in retaliation for his participation in Rekha Basu’s report. Informing Blodgett he was no longer welcome was tantamount to cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Mayberry’ actions were ill-thought, petty and child-like. They actually brought serious cause as to his qualifications to maintain the position his employers sent him here to perform. One would think the editor of a newspaper in a community where it has delivered the news for 100 years… first task would be a level playing field, free of bias, of predicament.

Every person who spends money with your paper, from a three line classified ad, to a full page buyer deserves nothing less but the truth in its content, if that is not the main mantra in the newsroom in which you work, if there isn’t a sign hanging in that newsroom that says; “The Truth Lives Here” then put the consequential warning on what you write informing the reader that it’s fiction. If it’s respect you seek, then it’s respect you should offer.
