MASON CITY – A man who spent time in Mason City committing crimes has been sent to prison – but has entered an appeal after getting a long sentence.
Montez Javon Lamont Guise, age 25, was at the probation office at 22 North Georgia Avenue in Mason City for a meeting on February 22, 2016. Guise was wanted on arrest warrants when he got there, and MCPD officers arrived to arrest him. However, Guise allegedly then tried to flee and resist arrest.
“Officers were able to arrest Guise eventually after he allegedly resisted arrest. One of the officers suffered some minor scrapes and abrasions while trying to subdue Guise,” a police spokesman told NIT after the incident.
After Guise was searched, baggies and a glass pipe were allegedly found in Guise’s possession. He was charged with interference with official acts causing injury and possession of drug paraphernalia (that charge was later dismissed).
After a plea deal, Guise was sentenced to prison terms of 10 years for a felony burglary crime he committed in Mason City on December 31, 2016; and a consecutive term of 90 days for interference with official acts causing injury. He got a concurrent term of 180 days for violating his probation in connection to a domestic assault he committed back in August of 2016.
Guise got an additional 15 days in jail after he was caught by Mason City police in September of 2016 with methamphetamine.
On April 14, Guise entered a certified notice of appeal with the Iowa courts as he remains incarcerated in the Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville. He was appointed a lawyer at the state’s expense.
Guise is still facing disorderly conduct – fighting or violent behavior for fighting accused murderer Peter Leroy Veal on the Saturday afternoon, March 4, in the Cerro Gordo county jail. He will face a trial in May.
