EDINBORO, Pennsylvania — The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team scored bonus points in five of its seven wins to top No. 23 Edinboro, 28-9, on Saturday night in the NWCA Division I National Duals Championship Series.
Topher Carton won by fall at 141 and four Hawkeyes won by major decision as Iowa closed its dual season with a 13-2 record.
Carton’s fifth pin of the season came at the 1:01 mark of a scoreless first period and gave Iowa a 14-0 advantage in the team score. Iowa stormed in front of the Fighting Scots by opening the dual with consecutive major decisions against ranked opponents. Top-ranked Thomas Gilman won by 10-2 major decision over No. 9 Sean Russell at 125 and No. 5 Cory Clark won by 10-1 major decision over No. 19 Korbin Meyers at 133.
The Hawkeyes also got major decisions from No. 2 Michael Kemerer at 157 and No. 3 Sammy Brooks at 184. Kemerer won 16-6 for his team-best 25th win of the season and Brooks won 14-4 over No. 17 Dakota Greer. Brooks has scored bonus points in his last four wins, including a pair of falls and two major decisions.
Iowa also won by decision at 174 and 197. No. 11 Alex Meyer erased a 6-3 deficit at 174 and earned an 11-7 victory, and Chase Wilcke controlled the action in a 6-2 win at 197.
Edinboro earned decisions at 149, 165, and 197. No. 3 Brandon Sorensen dropped a 7-5 decision in sudden victory to No. 11 Patricio Lugo at 149. Sorensen has just three losses this season, all in overtime. No. 17 Joey Gunther fell to No. 12 Austin Matthews, 4-1, a 165, and Steven Holloway dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 13 Billy Miller at 285.
The Hawkeyes return to the mat March 4-5 at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Indiana.
