MASON CITY – North Iowans who attended the Feb. 10 Legislative Listening Post hosted at the Mason City public Library by Rep. Sharon Steckman and Sen. Amanda Ragan are voicing dismay over the support expressed by the two lawmakers for a lawsuit which Iowa’s Attorney General, Tom Miller, is backing. In an interview with National Public Radio’s Audie Cornish, Mr. Miller stated on Jan. 30, 2017 that he has joined with 15 other state Attorneys General in support of federal lawsuits against President Trump’s Executive Orders on immigration. Miller announced his support of an amicus curiae brief that has been filed to stop the Trump administration from issuing temporary bans on the entry of people from nations with high numbers of Muslims. According to Tom Miller, “immediate and irreparable harms” may result from this Executive Order. In his interview, which aired on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’, on Jan. 30, Miller acknowledged that his candidate, Hillary Clinton, won only seven Iowa counties and just 42 percent of the vote in the 2016 presidential election. Nonetheless, he told NPR that he feels it’s wrong to “restrict severely Muslims from coming to this country.”
Clear Lake resident Sara Krull, who attended Saturday’s Listening Post, told NIT that, “I posed the question to both legislators, Steckman and Ragan, about the immigration lawsuit filed against President Trump. Steckman said she supported it, right away. I had to keep asking Ragan until she finally answered me and said ‘yes’ she agrees with Miller’s lawsuit.“
A Northwood subscriber, speaking on condition of anonymity, told NorthIowaToday.com that “aliens have no constitutional rights. Why is this slick-talking lawyer, Tommy Miller, trying to stop the President from taking actions that are designed to protect Americans?” Others who attended the Listening Post are also livid over this lawsuit, and Steckman’s and Ragan’s endorsement of it.
A Nora Springs resident told NIT that, “U.S. law allows Presidents to apply the law to deny entry to those deemed potentially unfit by our chief executive. This beloved country is sinking lower and lower on account of this kind of stuff; America’s safety is threatened by terrorists. Iowans must support efforts to ban those who might wish us harm. If we can’t control who gets in, there won’t be a country.”
But at their Listening Post on Feb. 10 at the Mason City public Library, state Representative Sharon Steckman and state Senator Amanda Ragan both expressed approval of Tom Miller’s actions to challenge President Trump’s Executive Orders on this issue. The listening post, which was also attended by Globe-Gazette reporter Molly Montag, focused chiefly on the collective-bargaining issue, which is of major concern to public employees. The Legislators were responding to a question from a constituent (Krull) when they endorsed Miller’s legal maneuvering around President Trump’s Executive actions.
Another NIT reader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “As a veteran who values our safety, I’m ticked off that these local politicians endorsed this crap. If Steckman and Ragan get their way, why, innocent, law-abiding Americans could become victims. They’d better change their thinking on this. If they won’t, then we need to elect some Legislators who are for America, and not for these foreigners.”

Teachers then buy all their own classroom supplies and supplies for kids who cannot afford them..A couple of weeks ago, a teacher I know bought some kids some snow boots hats and gloves ..parents could not afford. One kid had outgrown their clothes so they bought that too. I am not whining about teachers I know doing all of this..they gladly do it ! But it is not fair for people to disrespect and show disdain for the very people that take care of your kids everyday !

As a lawyer, my profession requires me to always understand what’s happening on the other side. From a legal perspective, there is nothing wrong with filing this complaint against Trump’s impulsive, poorly-written order on immigration. I commend Rep. Steckman and Sen. Ragan for having the courage and wisdom to endorse this action. But in doing so, they handed an issue to Republicans which will cost them votes. Sharon can afford to lose some votes, but Amanda cannot. My law partners and I discussed this at lunch just now. We all agreed that this, and other things like it, can make people who have no reason to vote Republican to support whoever opposes Steckman and Ragan. An attorney who was at the table knows Amanda, and Sharon, and she is going to suggest they change their position on this stupid non-issue.

You are correct ‘No more’, even if they are standing on US soil but are not under US control, like the Guantanamo detainees are, then they do NOT have all US constitutional rights.
