An Open Letter from Iowa Public Employees to State Lawmakers

Dear Iowa Republicans of the Senate, House, Governor Branstad and Lt Governor Reynolds:

What did we, Iowa’s public workers, ever do to you that you would strip us and our employers of the ability to sit down and work out our contracts like the professionals we all are? The perfectly timed smear campaign against our states’ educators is despicable to say the least.

Maybe you have forgotten the things we do FOR you. Some of us work odd hours and shifts, overnights and holidays to provide emergency police, fire, weather and medical services. Some of us lie awake at night inventing one more way to teach your child, never giving up until they learn. Some of us maintain our necessary infrastructure. Some of us are the keepers of the thousands of details that make up the myriad services at all levels of government that keep our cities, counties and state running. Whatever our part we provide our expertise to EVERYONE who needs or asks for it.

None of us became public servants because we thought we would get rich, and indeed none of us do. However, we deserve to make a living.

Similar experiments of breaking collective bargaining have failed in other states (Kansas, Wisconsin) resulting in lower wages in both the public and private sectors, shrinking rather than growing those economies. There is no need for Iowa to make the same mistake.

Chapter 20 is not broken. This attempt to rig it to oppress public employees will result in poor quality of services across the state as experienced, qualified workers leave the public sector or even move out of our state.

We hope you enjoy your short stay at the helm of our great state until the next election cycle when we will hire/elect more qualified people to run our government.

Sincerely,
Public Workers of Iowa
