Opinion: Commercialism has taken over Christmas

Christmas Barbie and Barbie Car: Commercialism has taken over
As a merchant who buys and sells continually throughout the entirety of the year I pay special attention to the biggest commercial market of the year. Let me say this: we have come a long way from Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

The pressure to buy starts earlier each year or so it seems. At the same time the relativity to the birth of Christ becomes more and more obscure as the years pass. People with credit cards are left with huge debt that takes the next 11 months to pay off.

This nationwide bazaar relies on your obligatory sense of conscience to make you feel guilty if you don’t buy something. You have to be aa arithmetic major to decipher the mathematical formulas attracted to some of these products. Then there are coupons that can further baffle your senses.

I propose a radical change to stem the tide of financial ruin:

1) No one over 12 gets a gift.
2) Expose Santa Claus as a fraud.
3) Everyone over age 12’s gift should be equal to one month’s health insurance premium. This program or something similar to it could restore the financial health of this nation within three years or at least take a big chunk out of it.

If you want to buy something for Christmas, something to commemorate the birth of Christ, then give your priest $150.00 and let him pick someone out in his congregation who is struggling with winter’s utility bills and wears a coat all day in their home… then sleeps in it at night. If you are compelled to buy, then buy that and don’t ask for names.

If you want to celebrate the birth of Christ in a manner that really fits the occasion, then visit with your priest or rabbi… they will know what to do.
