Law enforcement stops motorists for minor violations and gives turkeys instead of tickets

NEWTON, IOWA – In a generous gesture this Holiday season, law enforcement in one Iowa county threw traffic tickets to the birds.

Down in Jasper county, east of Des Moines, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office took a little time off from clamping down on motorists and instead spread some holiday cheer.

On Sunday evening, December 18th, 2016, Jasper County deputies and reserve deputies were working their patrol assignments, they agency said in a statement. They handled calls for service as they normally do. However in this case they had one added job duty.

With a generous donation from the Newton Walmart and Newton Hy-Vee Stores, 25 turkeys were waiting to be delivered to motorists traveling in Jasper County. Over a four hour period, deputies and reserve deputies conducted traffic stops for minor violations, and instead of writing citations or warnings, the drivers received a turkey for the holidays.

One woman who was apparently stopped said “it was definitely a surprise” not getting a turkey but instead getting a gift.

All around Iowa – including Mason City – local police and sheriff’s offices have been doing some good deeds, including surprising families and children with piking up tabs at shopping centers, many times for toys that kids get to enjoy.
