MASON CITY – City hall appears to be making some kind of effort to clean up the town, as it is now seeking a code enforcement manager that will be paid nearly $28 an hour.
The City of Mason City is currently taking applications for the position of Code Enforcement Manager within its Development Services department. According to the job description, “this hands-on position manages activities and staff related to zoning, housing, rental, and nuisance abatement inspections, compliance and enforcement, in addition to performing such inspections. We are looking for a manager with the demonstrated ability to welcome input, value problem solving and develop of partnerships within the community.”
Knowledge of municipal codes and experience in code enforcement is essential, city hall says. The job hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, varied as needed, and the hourly rate starts at $27.81 per hour.
One Mason City resident who has watched the town over the years remarked “River City looks worse than ever, except for the mayor’s neighborhood. He sure cleared away all those slummy properties since he took office. Too bad the crime is off the charts over there. The rest of the town looks like hell. What has he done in 7 years?”
Recently, city hall and police have embarked on a concerted “city-wide cleanup” effort with dozens of notices being served about town to alleged lawbreakers. NIT is told common violations include: junk, junk vehicles, brush piles, parking, zoning violations, unregistered rentals, rental code violations.
The same Mason City resident remarked “I told city hall about a number of run-down, abhorrent junk holes that people actually live in and asked them to take action. One in particular is owned by a rich Mercy pharmacist and his dietician wife who live in Asbury. They sold their highly-visible shack to a KFC worker on contract. All I get told is ‘we’ll take a look’. Who knows if they ever do.”
The city should hire some out of towner, with no related experience what so ever. Somebody who enjoys drinking at the local breweries daily, somebody with a sugar mama wife. That sounds like a good fit!
So, why don’t one of you whiner’s offer to do the job at 1/2 of that salary? Maybe, if you were qualified, they might consider you. I am no fan of the current administration but certain things need to be done in this town to improve it. They aren’t free.

It takes 3 people to replace one excellent woman.
Pat’s retirement will result in over 3 jobs being developed. All $28.00 an hour. Transit duties, she also manages Animal Control, Animal Shelter, Code Enforcement and Housing Inspection function.
That probably means she was getting paid to much, if they can afford to hire three to replace her.
Wonder which of the mayor’s buddies will get this cushy over-paid position? Cronyism lives on.
I always wondered what that building was the old armory,yes mason city does need cleaned up ,ive lived here bout 51 yrs out of my 54 yrs,born here even, its sad to come back to my home town that i use to love and could trust walking down the streets anytime of the day or night,now im never want to go out at night,lets clean up this town and be proud to call it home again!
Thats’s the Demorat answer — more government – 28.00 per hour + health benefits + Retirement/pension fund – plus truck/gas/office – secretary = more like $100.00 PER HOUR.

Three jobs won’t be created. No extra jobs are being created. If they hire someone from outside the department for the new job, they have to lay someone off. They will be hiring a transit manager to do that part of Pat’s job.
It’s a lose, lose situation for all. When buildings/homes are torn down, the city looses tax money. Take a guess at who picks up that loss. This town is deteriorating and nobody cares.
Most of them don’t need to be torn down. A little repair and they would be good to go. The slum lords won’t spend a penny they don’t have to. They would rather renters live in filth than spend their money.
The downtown area look good, but the rest of the city is trashed out and has just gotten worse over time. The city center is probably the worse. This would be a great job for the mayor as I hear he will be unemployed soon.
