Mason City man guilty of drunk driving after fleeing accident scene

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who fled a car crash before he struck another vehicle is guilty of his second drunk driving offense.

This dangerous situation developed on the evening of August 22, 2016. At about 7:08 PM, a caller reported a collision at 6th Street SW and Pierce Avenue. While officers were enroute, dispatch was updated that one of the involved vehicles had left without exchanging information. Officers located the fleeing vehicle in the 500 block of 14th Street SE and attempted to pull it over. During this process, the suspected run vehicle, a 1998 Oldsmobile 88, struck a parked 2004 Mercury Sable on the roadway.

Officers were able to get the driver to stop and then investigate. As a result, the driver, 29-year-old Matthew James Schneider of Mason City, was arrested for second-offense operating while intoxicated; failure to maintain control; leaving the scene of an accident; and failure to stop in an assured clear distance.

Schneider and his attorney, Joel Yunek, entered a guilty plea in November. He completed drunk driving school this month, and is now serving a jail term. He was put on a year of probation and must pay $2,641.25 in fines and court fees.

Schneider was caught in September of 2015 by Mason City police for drunk driving and later convicted.  He paid $1,797.50 in fines and court fees.
