Mason City sex offender wants prison sentence reconsidered, awaits hearing

MASON CITY – A Mason City man convicted of sexual acts with a child and has been serving time in a state prison awaits a hearing to have his sentence reconsidered.

Lane Bryan Sage, age 23, was sent to the state prison in Newton, Iowa, in October of 2015 after two violations of his probation in connection to his guilty plea to lascivious acts with a child. He had been placed on probation after an investigation was launched on December 6, 2013, when Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Deputies began to look into a reported case of sexual contact between an him and a juvenile. A search warrant was executed at a residence, 413 Prairie View Ct, in Mason City. As a result of the investigation, Sage, then age 20, was arrested. Sage was charged with 7 felony sex crimes. Sage later entered a guilty plea to just one charge – sexual abuse in the third degree against a female child 12-13 years of age. He was given a 10 year suspended prison term, a $1,000 suspended fine, and 5 years of probation. He was also ordered to pay $8,975.00 in court costs, fines ($250) and restitution. He was placed in the Beje Clark halfway house.

On March 24, 2015, the Iowa Department of Corrections reported to law enforcement that Sage had violated his probation and a warrant for his arrest was issued. Mason City police arrested him at Beje Clark and he was taken to jail and held on $10,000 bond. He faced a probation revocation hearing on April 20, 2015, was found guilty and sent to jail for 21 days.

Once more, Sage was found guilty of violating his probation, this time on September 30, 2015. As a result, judge Dedra Schroeder imposed the original 10 year prison sentence. Sage was transported to prison and ended up in a Newton, Iowa prison.

On September 26, 2016, Sage and his attorney Richard Tompkins filed a motion to have his sentence reconsidered. Sentencing judge Dedra Schroeder on October 17 granted a hearing for December 5. A progress report from the Newton Correctional Facility has been submitted to the court for consideration.
