DES MOINES – Dakota Access pipeline protestors claim to have started a fast in front of the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) in Des Moines after attending last week’s public board meeting by the IUB.

At the meeting, Dakota Access LLC gave what protestors call “an inaccurate account of the current status of pipeline construction.” Public comments were made by many landowners and other Iowans giving evidence of Dakota Access construction violations, they say. The public called for the IUB to follow legal procedure and order Dakota Access to stop construction but the IUB failed to act.

The pipeline protestors – who call themselves Mississippi Stand Water Protectors – are responding to these “illegal activities” of the privately owned Dakota Access and the alleged lack of accountability from the Utilities Board by fasting “until the Iowa Utilities Board acts in accordance with its own laws and regulations to cease construction based on investigation of violations from the out of state company Dakota Access.”

One faster of Mississippi Stand, Jessica Reznicek, said when asked why she is participating in the fast, “When the pipeline breaks, the whole state of Iowa will be fasting. It’s time the Iowa Utilities Board do the right thing and shut down the Dakota Access Pipeline.”

Mississippi Stand was an encampment started in Lee County, Iowa, the 31st of August in opposition to the drilling underneath the Mississippi River in Iowa. The encampment started with one woman and has grown into a mobile caravan of resistance across the state of Iowa.

Mississippi Stand is asking for others to join them in holding the IUB to task.  The group is asking people to call the IUB to demand accountability.  The number is 515-735-7347.  They say people may also visit the office at 1375 E. Court Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa.
