Over $70,000 in damage done to new cars when trucker smashes into bridge

CHARLES CITY – South Dakota trucker made a crucial mistake after dropping some new cars in Charles City, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

Charles City police officers were called to investigate an accident at South Grand Avenue and Highway 218 Wednesday. They say 2016 Western Star semi driven by 30-year-old Tyler Lau of Colton, South Dakota was pulling a trailer with new cars when he struck the underside of the bridge over South Grand Avenue (under the Avenue of the Saints) while travelling south.

As a result of the crash, there was more than $70,000 damage done to two new vehicles on the trailer along with slight damage done to the trailer. Police say it was determined that Lau had off-loaded vehicles in Charles City and never lowered the trailer wing back down.

The Iowa DOT was notifed and checked the bridge. Officers were on scene for over two hours assisting with traffic control while it was cleaned up.
