Opinion: Mason City man ponders future of downtown

Sometimes it's shocking what goes on in Mason City, because it's always a surprise.
Sometimes it’s shocking what goes on in Mason City, because it’s always a surprise.

What’s next for Mason City’s downtown? Until four-sixths of the current city elected are out… it’s really anyone’s guess.  Let’s hope the seventh to be picked December 6 has more sense.

Both the trash burning plant and the Pig People were thrust upon the population without a chance to vote one way or another. In both incidences it was outside forces that diverted horrific consequences that would have launched cancerous debris across the city coming from the burning plant… the pig people would have leveled this city totally. It would be unrecognizable after one year and in addition they would have dominated the entirety of the city from the moment the first load of hogs were unloaded.

Here is my thought; the first of each month, maybe in that Sunday Globe paper along with a full page on North Iowa Today at the same time, the Economic Development Commission could layout the total activity that took place over the last reporting period. The name and complete particulars of each prospect that either approached us or who that agency went to see.

Why should there exist all this “behind closed doors” secrecy? Why isn’t this information revealed openly to the entire community? These are not military secrets. Economic development here in town has been run like a covert operation, hiding everything from the residents who live and work here.

Why?

In a real community every resident works for progress… if they are allowed.
