MASON CITY – A Mason City man who previously was sent to prison for theft and other crimes is back behind bars accused of numerous crimes from throughout the area.
Ronald Benjamin Bakkum, age 48, is facing felony drug charges brought by Clear Lake police and Mason City police. He is also facing felony car burglary and fraud charges in Hancock county. He was brought to jail on warrants connected to these crimes back on September 27 and remains jailed as he awaits court hearings.
Bakkum pled guilty on April 28, 2014 to two counts of theft in the third degree. He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $1,250 and assessed $228.70 in costs. Bakkum – already a convicted felon – also pled guilty to theft in the second degree and was sentenced to five years in prison, fined $750 and required to pay $500.00 in restitution, as well as $288.70 in costs. He was sent to an Iowa prison in May of that year and appeared to have been paroled in October of 2015.
