VENTURA, IOWA – A hog confinement fire early Sunday destroyed 2750 hogs and piglets.
On October 2, 2016, at approximately 3:17 AM, Cerro Gordo deputies responded to a large hog confinement building on fire at 7442 Balsam Avenue, rural Ventura. The building is owned by Luscombe Enterprises. A large hog confirement building containing approximately 250 female hogs and 2500 piglets was destroyed. There was no one injured.
The fire remains under investigation at this time, and no cause has yet been determined.
Assisting the Cerro Gordo County Sheriffs Department were Ventura Fire, Clear Lake Fire, and Gamer Fire and EMS.

The first thing I’d be checking into is motive. Does this pig farmer have incentive to build a new hog confinement? Was he trying to burn down the old one, collect insurance money to build a new one?
The pigs were destined to live only a few months longer anyway as the practice of slaughter occurs when they reach about 4 months age. I’d say this hog farmer should NOT have his permits renewed to build any further facilities. I’d say he should be put out of business.
Which raises a good point…shouldn’t permits be required such as “animal handler” permits when dealing with live animals? Iowa needs to reform it’s Big AG heavy leaning rules. The Republican Party’s own Iowa Charter states that it will do everything to protect big agriculture and stop any animal rights groups from making headway…which is precisely why crimes against animals rarely go punished in this state.
