NEW YORK – Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson and his running mate William Weld were unable to name a leader of any foreign country during an interview on MSNBC this week.

Talking head Chris Matthews asked the question in a town-hall-style setting, with a room full of people, as Johnson and Weld sat on stools.

“Name a foreign leader you admire, you have to do this,” Matthews spouted. Both men were utterly dumbfounded and could not mumble the name of any foreign leader. The audience sat silent as the uncomfortable situation unfolded.  Weld finally blurted out “Merkel,” possibly meaning Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany since 2005.

On the Johnson-Weld election website, there is a short section on foreign policy. Their basic mantra is “to protect us from harm and to allow us to exercise our freedoms.”

Earlier this month, Johnson was befuddled again by MSNBC when he was asked by a commentator what should be done about Aleppo.

“And what is Aleppo?” Johnson asked, in response to the question.

Just this week, a United Nations spokesperson declared that children in Aleppo – a city in civil war torn Syria besieged by refugees – are trapped in a “living nightmare.”

“There are no words left to describe the suffering they are experiencing,” he added.

According to UNICEF, At least 96 children have been killed and 223 have been injured in eastern Aleppo since last Friday.
