CHARLES CITY – Over the last 24 hours Floyd County, IA, was inundated with rain reports of 11 plus inches of rain. Due to this event Floyd County, IA has declared an immediate state of emergency. The Floyd County Emergency Operations Center has been activated in the Floyd County Court House.

Emergency Management, City and County government as well as all public safety agencies have requested that all non-emergency calls or inquiries be made to the Floyd County Emergency Operations Center at 641-257-6144.

All true emergency calls should be made to 911.

Sandbags for all citizens of Floyd County are being provided at no charge. These sand bags can be picked up at the Hy-Vee parking lot in Charles City, IA. All residents will be requested to check in and out with the number of bags they are taking. Additional bags and sand are now available now for immediate pickup. Sandbag distribution will end tonight at 1000 PM and resume at 0700 Friday morning.

The Cedar River in Charles City has a flood stage of 12’ 0” and is currently at 16’ 93”. The Cedar River in Charles City is expected to crest at 23’ 2” at 8 PM on Friday.

Evacuation is being conducted by police and fire personnel in flood prone areas. Gas and electric services will be disconnected in these areas. Please continue only limited use of City water and sewer. Drinking water is safe to drink in Charles City.

The Hwy 18/Brantingham Bridge in Charles City will close to two lanes of traffic effective midnight and perhaps close entirely later tonight. The Main Street Bridge in Charles City is anticipated to remain open.

Those residents in Charles City with either storm water or sewer damage are encouraged to contact the Charles City Police Dept. 641-228-3336.

The Salvation Army has set up a temporary shelter at the old Middle School at 500 N. Grand for anyone who needs lodging or showers.

Many roads have been closed throughout Floyd County due to washed out gravel roads, culverts and bridges. Travel on ALL County Secondary roads is not recommended.

There will be a press conference in the Assembly Room of the Floyd County Court House at 9:30AM Friday morning where additional updates will be issued.
