Man cited for striking road worker directing traffic on highway near Rockwell

ambulanceMASON CITY – A Rockwell man has been cited for striking with his car a road worker who was directing traffic north of Rockwell on Highway 65.

The accident took place Thursday at about 12:30 PM near 155th Street and Highway 65. The Cerro Gordo Sheriffs Office was dispatched to a car/pedestrian accident north of Rockwell at that time.

According to a report, 70-year-old Merlyn Tramel of Rockwell was Northbound on Highway 65 approaching road workers with the Iowa Department of Transportation when he struck 34-year-old Mark Nel of Nora Springs, who was directing traffic due to water crossing the roadway.

Nel was transported to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa due to injuries sustained from the accident. Tramel was cited for unsafe approach to certain stationary vehicle resulting in injury.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting the Cerro Gordo County Sheriffs Department was the Iowa Department of Transportation, Rockwell-Swaledale EMT’s and Mason City Fire Medics.
