Mason City police warn of scam IRS calls

scam-alertMASON CITY – Mason City police are warning citizens of scam calls once again fraudsters posing as the IRS.

According to a statement from the  MCPD:

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been hearing (and receiving ourselves) scam phone calls from an automated female voice that claims to be calling on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service. The phone numbers we have heard about so far, show that they may be from from Sacramento, CA; Fillmore, CA; and Boone, IA.

If you receive these messages, please hang up. You may also comment on this post with the phone number and location it was from to alert others. Remember that legitimate business with the IRS will usually come in the form of written correspondence. It may also come through the person who you hired to complete and file your tax return.

Don’t give sensitive personal information over the phone when you are uncertain who is on the other end of the line. Take steps to protect yourself from becoming a victim.
