DES MOINES – DNR wildlife staff covered 6,000 miles of county roads during the first two weeks of August to count upland game populations. So what are they predicting for fall pheasant hunting in Iowa?
A repeat of last year, and as Iowa hunters know, that’s a good thing.
The survey found an average of 21 pheasants per 30-mile route statewide. In 2015, the statewide average was 24 pheasants per route.
“Our pheasant population is similar to 2007 when we harvested 630,000 roosters,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland game biologist. “The birds are here, we need hunters to return.”
Iowa’s quail population has been on the rise and is now at its highest since 1989, especially across south-central and southwest Iowa.

It is nothing like it used to be. They have plowed under a lot of habitat and pick the corn so close (to save money) there is no cover and little food left.

Hunting in Iowa is more and more for the elite – they rent the best hunting areas for their clubs (etc) the rest is mostly barren ground that habitat cannot survive on.. Farmers get money from the government – money from reningt out their land -money for renting their land out to hunters – look around – when was the last time you seen a poor farmer or for that fact an Iowa politician who did not own farm land ? ..Just saying.
SIR or madam, you are partiality correct. The other factors are the limited areas of public land, now before someone jumps on me saying there is plenty of public land (check the facts to other states) limited space and boring to repeat, but also cram hunters chasing all game open in season in those small areas makes it a challenge to species hunt.And lets not forget overall cost, license, shells, gas to get there and back. younger kids not wanting to learn and older hunters saying what’s the use.
