WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Rockford, Iowa meth dealer will be getting out of prison way early, thanks to President Barack Obama.
Michael Sandmeyer, age 55 and formerly of Rockford, Iowa, but now calling a minimum security federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota his home, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine (mixture) after having previously been convicted of a felony drug offense; felon in possession of a firearm in the Northern District of Iowa.
He was sentenced on January 22, 2003 to 240 months’ imprisonment; 10 years’ supervised release.
After a Commutation Grant announced Wednesday, August 3, 2016, Sandmeyer’s prison sentence is now commuted to expire on December 1, 2016.
In all, 214 individuals were granted commutation of sentences by President Obama, today.
“The power to grant pardons and commutations… embodies the basic belief in our democracy that people deserve a second chance after having made a mistake in their lives that led to a conviction under our laws,” President Obama said.
Haven’t you neanderthals been paying attention?? Both parties have been talking about prison reform for years. Republicans and Democrats alike have promised to reduce the population of minimum risk, non violent, drug related offenders. These persons cost us millions of dollars in punishment and produce no return on our investment.
It costs the taxpayer over $30,000 a year to house an inmate. This man has served 13 years of his 20 year conviction. Which one of you whiner’s wants to pay the remaining $200,000+ to keep him in prison. Maybe he has learned something. I hope so.

The problem with Obama’s statement here is these are not people that just “made a mistake,” these are long time multiple law offenders that had total disregard of any law. It wasn’t one mistake.
