Mason City man beaten by couple with baseball bats, then arrested

MASON CITY – A Mason City man got way more than he bargained for after agreeing to fight a man in the street, as he was met by armed combatants who pummeled him with baseball bats.

Jason Lee Rinnels, age 32 of Mason City, allegedly was challenged to a fight Saturday night, June 25. Rinnels answered the bell and arrived at a rental house, 515 8th Street SE, to face-off with the challenger, who he says was Cody Henderson.

Rinnels tells NIT he stayed in the street as Henderson came outside to fight him. As told by Rinnels, Henderson approached him with a baseball bat.

“He was swinging at me,” Rinnels said. “I got the bat away from him, out of his hands, and threw it into the street.

“Then, I punched him in the face.”

As Rinnels allegedly was getting the upper hand in the fisticuff, Henderson’s girlfriend, Taylor Nitcher, rushed into the street, picked up the baseball bat and began to beat Rinnels. Also at this time, another man joined the fight with a baseball bat, Quinten Askildson, and also struck Rinnels. He was hit by the bats several times and was bitten, as well.

The fight was stopped by a pizza delivery man, who allegedly wrote a statement describing what he saw to police.

Rinnels’ wife, Shaylea, told NIT that if the pizza delivery man hadn’t intervened, “it could have been much worse”.

Rinnels then left in his car, and police were called by the bat-wielders after Rinnels left. Rinnels says he drove himself to the police station straight from the fight scene on 8th Street, to give his side of the story.

Mason City police confirmed to NIT that the incident took place. Chief Jeff Brinkley tells NIT that “our investigation indicated that Rinnels went to the victim’s residence. A fight ensued and Rinnels was hit by someone with a baseball bat who came to the aid of the victim. The victim (Cody Henderson) was transported to Mercy for treatment.”

Rinnels was arrested at MCPD headquarters on charges of serious assault and criminal trespassing and taken to the county jail, where he was booked and held.

Rinnels’ wife Shaylea went to the jail and bonded him out soon thereafter. She took him to Mercy hospital for medical treatment. He had a broken arm, two broken ribs and bite injuries, which he says were inflicted by Henderson.  He will need surgery on his arm because two bones are broken; rods will have to be implanted.

Rinnels told NIT that he knows he was guilty of the assault, but feels he is being charged unfairly.

“Everyone should have gotten disorderly conduct, at the most,” he explained, since he was never on private property and everyone fought on their own free will.

“But, they all should be charged too.”
