vetterFLOYD COUNTY, IOWA – William “Bill” Vetter is announcing his campaign as an Independent candidate for Floyd County Sheriff. Vetter is confident that his extensive training, proven leadership, and diverse experience will help him bring a fresh leadership direction and allow for the enhancement and expansion of the Floyd County sheriff departments capabilities, while keeping in step with the new challenges & ever changing faces of crime. In addition Vetter looks to build greater transparency, inter-agency training and communication as well as visibility and interaction with the communities in Floyd County.

“I lead by example and believe all law enforcement must be accountable for their actions or lack of action,” said Vetter. “Being a servant of the community is a privilege and a lifestyle, not just a job. All law enforcement must have an inherent responsibility to do the right thing, whether in uniform or not.”

Vetter attributes a great deal of his personal code of ethics not only to his parents, Maxine and the late Ernest Vetter of Charles City, but to his twenty-six years in the United States Marine Corps. He joined the Corps immediately after graduating early from Charles City High School in 1980, and served in two combat tours (Desert Storm and Beirut, Lebanon), attaining the rank of Sergeant Major in 2002. Vetter retired in February of 2006 and return to Charles City in pursuit of a law enforcement career. Starting as a county-wide dispatcher and a reserve officer with the Charles City Police Department, Vetter was hired as a full-time police officer in June 2006. He was later appointed as Charles City’s first Community Oriented Police Officer, the position he currently holds.

“As the community oriented police officer, I have experienced first hand the impact of law enforcement being involved with their communities. I understand that catching criminals is important, however preventing the crime is even better. We can do that by building trust between officers and the youth, elderly, business owners and schools, while educating each other along the way. It is this kind of proactive approach to law enforcement I intend to implement as sheriff,” commented Vetter.

In addition to campaigning for sheriff and working as a police officer, Vetter has or currently contributes his time to organizations in the city and county: Floyd County Veterans Affairs (current chair), FOCUS (Free Our Children of Unhealthy Substances), Family Making a Difference (serving Floyd, Mitchell, & Chickasaw Counties), Child Abuse Prevention Council (current chair), The Hut (Youth Center and after school program), Charles City Chamber of Commerce volunteer, and Community Revitalization Outreach Committee, Iowa Crime Prevention Association, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers and other county organizations as noted on his website VetterForSheriff.com. His wife, Tami, is an entrepreneur with two businesses in Charles City, The Rustic Corner, and Working Women, Inc. William has one son, Garrett, who is a Captain in the United States Marine Corps and currently stationed in Virginia Beach, VA serving as a Training Officer in a joint services command.

I sure hope mr Vetter is successful in his campaign for Sheriff. We cant keep going the way we are right now and the deputy who is running now is a exact copy of our current Sheriff. He wont help any of the communities in Floyd county . Its time for a change in Floyd County.
