Cyclones add Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Steve Prohm announced today the addition of Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo. Kasongo will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2016-17 season per NCAA transfer rules.

“We are excited to add Ray to our program,” Prohm said. “He has great size and athleticism and we are looking forward to working with him during his sit out season as we continue to develop his skill set.”

Kasongo, a 6-8, 245-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario, saw limited action in 22 games for the Vols in 2015-16. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game in his first season at UT after transferring from JUCO national power College of Southern Idaho. Kasongo scored a season-high six points against Ole Miss, going 3-for-5 from the floor. He shot 52.2 percent from the floor as a sophomore.

In his only season at College of Southern Idaho, Kasongo played in all 34 games while helping the Eagles reach the round of 16 at the NJCAA National Tournament. He averaged 6.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 15.6 minutes per game.

Kasongo’s AAU background is one that is familiar to Iowa State. The athletic big man played for CIA Bounce, the same program as Nazareth Mitrou-Long and former Cyclone Melvin Ejim.
