The following statement is from Mayor Eric Bookmeyer, released Friday morning after it was announced Prestage Foods will not be coming to Mason City:
“I want to extend our best wishes to the Prestage family and their staff. They are tremendous people and I regret the result. There is a city in Iowa that is going to get a tremendous family company and community partner.”
“I am sincerely disappointed for our City, Corridor and Chamber staffs and partners that were so invested in this project. They really did an admirable job and gave it their all, along with all of our supporters. I wholeheartedly salute them.”
“I am also thankful for the three “ayes” and Mr. Schickel for having the courage to continue to seek solutions.”
“We have six great council members that will move forward together. We are already on to the next projects and will continue to sell Mason City as a great city in North Iowa.”
Are the citizens of Mason City aware of the fact that Charles City turned down Prestage last Fall? Did Mayor Bookmeyer & cronies report this fact at any council meeting? Did Robin Anderson report this fact ?

…it is interesting that in this letter “to the people”, the mayor says nothing positive about the 3 council person…who did their jobs in looking at the proposal…and saying “NO” to it. This attitude is typical of our city leaders and the Globe Gazette in saying “if you aren’t for “us” than you are “against” us…never mind that you have brains to think on your own!

I truly believe that if the Mayor, The Corredor, The chamber, and counsel would have not been so sneaky from the beginning and tried to run this through so fast that this project probably would have gained the support of the majority of the citizens.

Hang in there Mayor Bookmeyer! I may not agree with you on the benefits of Prestage, but you’ve done a lot of great things for the city over the years, and I for one are looking forward to more of that!
BULL! He is the worst mayor we have ever had and doesn’t care what the people say, his way or the highway. The sooner we can vote him out, the better.
I only claim to represent myself. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. If you believe there are better candidates out there you should campaign to unseat him when the time comes. Anonymously badmouthing him is however unlikely to accomplish anything for our community, especially at a time like this. Over the last few months, our grass-root movement has proven itself a worthy fighter. Now is the time to prove ourselves an equally worthy winner!
