I have continually tried to educate myself on both sides and made careful consideration of the overall positive and negative impact to public services of a huge processing plant (1500+ Jobs). The monetary cost and demand to the city’s public services and surrounding areas will be greater than the tax dollars we receive from any proposed development agreement. This is not to mention the potential cost to environment and quality of life to our city and region that cannot be adequately predicted. Many of the cities who have ‘gone through the growing pains’ of such plants eventually work out all the problems after a city begins to collect all the tax dollars from these companies.
Even with these concerns, we as a city could roll the dice and negotiate a development agreement where we struggle for 10 years believing in the end we would be better off. However, I feel a development of this size and scope should only be justified by a clear majority of the people to support it. This is definitely not the case in Mason City, opinions are mixed at best. There is no doubt this plant will make people more money; however, it is the other citizens who are opposed to this plant who will have to subsidize this project with their time, energy and potential tax dollars.
As an elected official, it is my duty to do what I believe is best for our city. I do not see how dividing our community is worth it any longer. We need to move forward as a city. This is why I will no longer support any development agreement which concerns Prestage Foods of Iowa.
Mr. Lee, you are mistaken if you think a majority of citizens did not want this deal. You listened to the loud mouthed minority not realizing that the majority was silent because they never dreamed this city council would kill the best economic deal this city has seen in decades. If this deal had been put to a city wide vote you would be surprised at the level of support. Some years ago there was a similar negative minority outcry over a bond issue to support Curries. On a city wide vote that issue passed with 90% support. This deal would have succeeded as well on a city wide vote. The lesson here is this city still does not have the council that it needs to move forward. But that can be fixed at the next election.

I see Jon is about as good at making decisions for Mason city as he was as a football coach! HORRIBLE! Look at all the money our community lost because we don’t want anymore “outsiders” coming into town, whatever!
Actually his decision making for the city and his football coaching career are about the same. John was a good football coach, just did not have the talent around him to have a successful team. He is also a good councilman, again no talent around him on the council to make a good team. He made good and correct decisions as a coach and he has made the a good and correct decision here, his no vote is by far the best thing for Mason City.
Good process, excellent outcome. As a Friend of Iowa CCI and a supporter the intention to serve “the greater good, I applaud you’re comprehensive work and your Courageous stance. We fight these same battles here in Southern Minnesota, and hope for such reasonable outcomes that reflect more than just “the Love of money”.

I was immediately concerned and felt a bit betrayed by our city council when I first found out this was not the case on the first round of votes. We have one of the if not the lowest household incomes in the state? We have 75% of the students in our school system on free or reduced lunch? Many because the parents just refuse to work.

as far as the rest? The mall is empty! The Sear Target shopping center is empty, except for tobacco outlet shining example of trade in Mason City.
Come in on 65 from the north, block after block of boarded up businesses and houses in disrepair. A empty shell of a cement plant. Come in on 122 from the west and drive by the empty K-mart as well as others.
Come in on 65 S and drive by the Rosebowl shell that has been sitting burned out for several years.
Look at N. I. Reality and look at the 300 homes for sale in Mason City? Most of have been for sale for several years

This controversial issue has created division in our community. Continued debate on this issue is creating a community PTSD as citizens on both sides of the issue become firmly entrenched in their beliefs. The longer we dwell on this poisonous topic, the harder it will be for community to recover.
IT IS TIME for all remaining council members to voice their love for community. By publically declaring NO to Prestage building a kill facility in Mason City.

I, am on the fence with this development. I want decent paying jobs brought to this community, if there is such a thing. But, I feel the negatives out weigh the positives on this deal. Sure, if it went through, there would be some people in this town that would come out smelling like a rose, and we all know who they are. The citizen tax payers in this town should not foot the bill and lose their quality of life, what there is of it, on the get rich scheme of the elite.
