MASON CITY – He didn’t break any laws, but cops blasted a local landlord with a taser during a law enforcement class.

At a Police Academy class held Thursday night in Mason City with local law enforcement, landlord and insurance agent Matt Dodge volunteered to be tazed.

“It was something to see and I don’t think he will ever do that again,” a fellow student in the class told NIT.

“Last night, one of the adult students voluntarily signed a waiver and wished to experience what a brief Taser activation felt like during the Citizens’ Police Academy class,” a Mason City police spokesman told NIT. “The student (Matt Dodge) experienced about 1 second of electrical current from a Taser.”

“The Taser battery is basically 2 lithium batteries about the size of two CR123A batteries,” the spokesman told NIT.  “The Taser battery is much smaller than a defibrillator battery(ies). The intermittent electrical pulses per second the Taser sends through the recipient’s outermost muscles and nerves causes temporary ‘neuromuscular incapacitation’ when the two Taser probes connect and create a circuit causing up to 20,000 pulses per battery of cells.”

The point of contact for the TASER probes is very small. Taser probes do not need to penetrate the skin to be effective; this is the reason for the 50,000 volts (V) open circuit peak voltage.

The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to provide an educational opportunity for citizens to learn first-hand about police and sheriff operations, procedures, and training. Participants in the Citizen Police Academy will come away with a better understanding how of law enforcement functions within the criminal justice system.
