Comes now Max Weaver; mystery, myth, misunderstood, hated, loved, envied, warm hearted, giving and dedicated, opinionated…..resolute.
I got to know Max several years ago when I entered the lobby of the City Hall building waiting for the elevator. When the doors opened out stepped Max Weaver. Quite frankly I really didn’t know what to expect, you see I had butchered him like a Prestige hog in news print…more than once.
It was what could be described as an difficult moment. As I looked down Max already had his hand out wanting to shake hands, that completely disarmed me. After several minutes of conversation I realized there before me was an enigma….this man wasn’t what he was portrayed to be….not even close.
Attire; Max wears clothes with holes in them….does he have to? No, it’s a choice he makes, I think it’s an act of defiance, an ” in your face” sort of thing. It also belies his actual intelligence….don’t be fooled by his wardrobe this is a very bright well researched man. His two sons were home schooled and are extremely bright and articulate.
Max has never used alcohol or tobacco by choice….his choice.
It seems the bulk of his adult life has been spent looking out for the rights of the downtrodden, the disadvantaged and the never ending struggle to unearth the truth. A commodity rarely sought in the world of politics. He was the spark that ignited the move to deny a burning facility to build in Mason City. Weaver was concerned about carcinogenic debris infecting the air especially as it was to be built near Newman School. It would be interesting to know that particular burning plant never found a community that would allow them in, not one but Bookmeyer without any testing of any kind….threw the doors of this community wide open.
Max Weaver wasn’t alone, there were multitudes who stood by him and in the end Max and his minions succeeded in keeping our city safe.
And now comes Prestage Farms with a monumental threat to this community, one far more devastating then anyone could ever imagine, one that will destroy the very fabric of not only this city, but also the whole of North Iowa. The cavalier stance taken by this council is truly one of the most egomaniacal displays of arrogance ever witnessed by those who conveyed one of their most valuable possessions to them….their vote.
The anomaly here is the school teacher….the one who teaches government; John Lee. Can’t you just see him pacing the floor in front of his class talking about democracy and the right of the citizenry to chose. This man was part and parcel of a conspiracy that if allowed to proceed will permanently decimate life here as it once was. He should resign his seat at the table…..and apologize to the many students he lied to. He doesn’t belong in a classroom.
John Lee is not alone in sequestering the truth in this debacle, each and every council person along with the mayor and city administrator shares equal fault in setting out to deceive each person living here….and they come very close to getting it done.
While a case might be made that the people from Prestage Farms are technically not lying to you, they are not reveling everything which is close to the same thing, maybe worse. This isn’t Prestage Farms first rodeo, there are no virgins in that hog lot. These people along with the help of the council, the mayor and administrator are going to carpet bomb all of North Iowa with pig shit! Seven or eight farmers who spoke at the council meeting will be driving the trucks; so the trucks are outside now….are getting in?

The scariest thing of all is the people of position and the tribes who want to be like them is the hatred and judgement of Max Weaver is more important to them than the epic mistake of this pig plant.
They would rather destroy our soil, pocketbooks, air and on and on than for Max to be right. It isn’t about wrong and right to them it’s if Max is for or against something they will do the opposite.

Mason City used to be a magnet for immigrants from sugar beet processing. Many Latino names survive although the migrant field workers and permanent plant workers are gone. People have apparently forgotten their contributions to the community.
We have seen similar comments made when meatpacking plants have been proposed in other rural communities, such as Spencer and Iowa Falls. Residents told their councilors in each of their communities that they liked their communities white, and that they did not want to become “like Storm Lake.”
Those other places, including Mason City, are shrinking in population and future prospects.
It is silly for the state and local governments to throw money at a slaughterhouse that would locate here, anyway, because of our corn and soybeans. It is wrong to oppose its location over “cultural clashes.” That simply has not been the experience in Storm Lake.
The community is growing, and food processing gives people a foot on the first rung of the ladder to American success. Storm Lake will be a far stronger community in future generations than those who shut out people who do not look like them over base misperceptions.
I remember when Max wanted a Toyota parts distribution center, lots of good jobs, not shit ass ones like Buttmeyer is trying to shove in you’re face. Everyone snickered at him without giving it a second thought.

Not a cerro gordo resident but if I was a council member who voted for the Hog plant I would be ashamed to be seen in public not to mention my personal well being.

Excuse me. John Lee was elected as a representative of the people. Voters can call him and speak for or against the pork plant and he is supposed to listen to his constituents and vote according to their wishes. In this manner, the citizenship IS choosing whether or not to have the pork plant. Every citizen is represented by a council member. If he doesn’t contact his council member to voice an opinion, the council member will vote his best choice. Speak up to your council member or hold your peace.
That would require the people that complain on here to actually do something… bitching without engagement is so much easier.

As an elected official Max evolved into an obstructionist who stared in his very own reality TV show, the Mason City Council Comedy Hour. His award winning performances contributed to his defeat in subsequent elections. But rising from the ashes, Max the concerned citizen can make a difference on this issue. However it is up to Max, its all about his approach.
I agree. Max is much better from the back of the room than the front. Unfortunately he still has the bad habit of getting too personal too quickly.
I notice lot’s of friends of NIT. Obviously they read the articles. WHERE are they? If they are against something so strongly they need to let it be known! No one should be afraid or intimidated. Or if your good friend doesn’t agree with you. Show up!
I do believe there is another meeting this week. Max usually does all our dirty work alone, let’s get behind him on this one and show those bastards it’s not just a handful. You can do this. I must say, I read a ton of opinion columns every day and I’ve never seen a single one remove an entire paragraph without printing some kind of explanation about why they chose to do so. Even then, it’s highly irregular.
Yes, the paragraph you have cited was posted as part of this op-ed as sent to NIT by Mr. Children. Very soon thereafter, Mr. Weaver called the NIT newsroom. He explained that while he was very appreciative of the fine editorial submitted by Mr. Children, he was not comfortable with such powerful language. He requested the paragraph in question be removed. NIT obliged his request.

I did call Max and told him my displeasure of the 2nd to last paragraph. He agreed absolutely. He said that was between Matt the publisher and Peter Children the writer. He has tried to reach out to Matt. You can reach out to Max as I did @ 641-420-0832. I did not get permission to write his number here but when speaking with Max he would not hesitate or mind speaking to any one. I might add it was a very nice and enlightening conversation.
While I personally oppose the hog plant, this opinion piece probably does more harm than good. It reads like a parody with it’s mindlessly ridiculous allusions to “Nazis” and “Jewish Ghettos”. It also repeats the long debunked canard that we live in a “democracy” as opposed to a representative republic. Civics 101. The author then uses that basic error to call for the resignation of a teacher. Laughably silly.
There are a plethora of excellent reasons to oppose Prestage moving into Mason City. Unfortunately, Mr. Children (the last name is quit fitting) chooses to use predominantly silly, nonsensical arguments that can’t really be taken seriously. I give this a D-.
It has been more then 70 years since the Nazi’s did anything bad to any Mason City people, but this Prestige will make alot of problems for us. Go for it Max, some body has to be on the front lines and stop this shit. If more folks would of listen to Max in his hay day, we would of been alot better off then we are. You think its bad now, wait till there is bar fights ever night, courts get clogged, free lunches for just about ever school kid, and your grocery labels are in Spanish.
